Peaceful Vap Poya Day!

Today, we commemorate Vap Poya, a significant day in the Buddhist calendar that falls on the full moon day of the month of Vap (November). This day marks the conclusion of the three-month rainy season retreat (Vassana) for Buddhist monks, a time dedicated to deepening their meditation and teachings.
Historically, Vap Poya is tied to a pivotal event in Buddhist tradition. It was on this day that the Buddha delivered the "Sutta on the Dhamma", which emphasizes the importance of community, compassion, and the cultivation of wisdom. This day is also celebrated as the beginning of the Kathina season, where devotees offer robes and essentials to monks as an act of generosity and gratitude.
Vap Poya serves as a reminder for us to reflect on the values of kindness, generosity, and unity. As we come together as a community to support our monks, let's also take a moment to nurture our own spiritual growth and extend compassion to all beings.
May this Vap Poya inspire peace, harmony, and mindfulness in our lives. 🙏🌿

Nikini Poya is the second Poya in the Vas season and falls during August. Nikini Poya marks the first Dhamma Sangayana (conference) of Buddhist monks. The ‘Vas’ retreat begins with Esala Poya and continues through Nikini Poya. ‘Vas’ is approximately four months where all Buddhist monks avoid outdoor activities, spending their days in intense spiritual pursuit.

Their relationship with the lay devotees too takes on more meaning, as the monks are considered to be more accessible for discussions and obtaining advice than at other times. This in turn has a very positive impact on the attitudes and outlook of the lay devotees, and it is they who pay attention to the welfare of the Buddhist monks and address their requirements at this time of retreat. It was under a directive of the Buddha all those centuries ago that this retreat was initiated, and it is continued even to this day.

First Dharma Sangayana (Sangha Council)

The most significant event about Nikini Full Moon Poya day was the first Dhamma Sangayana (convocation) which was held in the Sattapanni Cave in Rajagahanuwara many centuries ago. Three months had passed since the Parinirvana (Nirvana after death) of the Buddha, and the senior disciples of the Blessed One felt a need to enforce certain principles and rules about the behavior of the Maha Sangha.

It was noticed that a certain monk was behaving in a manner unseemly to the Maha Sangha, therefore this convocation was held and presided over by Mahakassapa Thero. This event also marked the attainment of Arahanthship by the Buddha’s chief disciple, Ananda Thero. He had been the Buddha’s chief attendant and was considered second only to the Blessed One in prudence, intelligence, and wisdom, yet he had not attained Arahantship, since this could happen only after the Parinirvana of the Buddha. The Dhamma Sangayana commenced with 499 bhikkhus, with Ananda Thero, who became an Arahant on the eve of the event, taking the total congregation to 500.

Poson full-moon poya day (Poson Poya Day, Poson Festival) celebrates the arrival of Buddhism in Sri Lanka in the 3rd century BC, a festival of great historical and religious significance celebrated island-wide by Buddhists. Poson, held on the full moon day of June, commemorates the occasion over 2,000 years ago when Arahat Mahinda, son of Emperor Asoka of India, converted King Devanampiyatissa to Buddhism. The main center of celebration is Mihintale, the ancient monastic complex where the royal missionary monk Mahinda perched the first sermon to the ruling king, and at Anuradhapura the ancient capital, to which large crowds of pilgrims converge. Mass religious observances, illuminations pageants are part of the celebrations.

For Buddhists, this hallowed day of Poson is second only to Vesak in terms of importance. Although Poson is celebrated throughout the island, the major ceremonies are to be found in Anuradhapura and Mihintale. Long lines of devotees dressed in white climb the many steps to the top of the Mihintale hill first to the temple, and then to the dagobas that adorn the nearby hillocks. In addition, many devotees climb to the very top of the rock, to the spot where Arahat Mahinda delivered his initial discourses.

Poson Poya is celebrated annually with great fervor throughout the island but particularly in Mihinthalaya where Mahinda Thero first put his foot to preach the word of Lord Buddha. This is why Mihinthalaya is called the cradle of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. With the establishment of Bhikku Sasanaya all other elements of a civilized society began to emerge with the art of writing, art, architecture, river civilization, religious rituals in song and dance forms, literature, all with royal patronage.

Many religious activities are organized during this poson period in Sri Lanka such as Sil campaigns, Bodhi Poojas, Dansalas (Freely giving foods, coffee, tea from people), Poson devotional songs, Poson pandols (thoran) and lanterns. Lot of Poson pandols and Poson Lanterns are making Anuradhapura in Sri Lanka.

In Poson many temples are filled with Atasil devotees and pilgrims all over Sri Lanka to mark this great event. The devout, clad in pure white with no make-up or jewelry, make their way to the temple,to spend the next twenty-four hours in quiet contemplation.

Vesak is a religious and cultural festival in Sri Lanka. It is celebrated on the day of the full moon in the month of May.
Vesak Day is one of the biggest days of the year and is celebrated by Buddhists all over the world. Buddhists commemorate the important events that took place in the life of Lord Buddha on this day. First comes the birth of Siddhartha Gautama in Lumbini in Nepal which took place under the arbor of Sat trees where queen Mahamaya gave birth to him. The second event was Siddharta Gautam’s supreme attainment as the Buddha, the Enlightened One. The third event was Lord Buddha’s Parinibbana over 2500 years ago at Kusinagar.
Apart from Sri Lanka, many Asian countries including India, Japan, Singapore and Taiwan celebrate Vesak. Many religious activities are organized during this period in Sri Lanka such as Sil campaigns, Bodhi Poojas, Dansalas (Freely giving foods, coffee, tea from people), Vesak devotional songs (Bakthi Gee), pandols (thoran) and lanterns.
Many temples get filled with devotees and pilgrims all over the country to mark this great event. In temples Buddhists worship, offer flowers, light lamps and burn incense. These traditional observances, in essence, have their value in satisfying the religious and emotional needs of the people.
Buddhists generally wear a white dress and go to the temple and participate in the traditional ceremonies. Many of them spend the whole day in the temple and reaffirm their determination to follow the teachings of Buddha.
On this holy day the ‘Dana’ (alms giving) plays an important role. This is a sign of sharing joy and peace with people. During the Vesak Festival week, the selling of alcohol and flesh is usually prohibited, with abattoirs also being closed.
Other than the exclusive religious aspects of the festival, the Buddhists of Sri Lanka, decorate their houses and public places and arrange for various cultural events.
Birth of Siddharta Gautam
The Siddharth or lord Buddha, the divine creature inquired about five affairs before expiring for the final birth. The inquiries are the: right time, right area, right continent, right caste and right mother.
Then, as any Buddhists know, the fully mindful divine being entered the womb of Queen Mahamaya. A prince was born on a Vesak Poya day to the Queen and King Suddhodana and was named Siddhartha, one who has found meaning of existence. The Queen passed away seven days after the prince’s birth.
Attainment as Lord Buddha
Gautama Buddha was trained in various mental skills under many teachers, only to get disillusioned that they do not have the truth he looked for. The right way to achieve the truth dawned on him one day. He directed his mind in the path of meditation. Moments later he reached enlightenment and conquered the world of sorrows on Vesak Poya day.
Lord Buddha’s Parinibbana
80-year old Gotama Buddha then announced His passing away, Parinibbana, would take place on the third watch of the night at Sal grove of Malla royal family, and it happened to be a Vesak Poya day.

Good Friday is a deeply meaningful day in the Christian faith, observed during Holy Week to commemorate the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ. It is a day of solemn reflection, prayer, and remembrance for Christians around the world.

On this sacred day, many gather for church services and special observances such as the Stations of the Cross, retracing Jesus' journey to Calvary. It is a time marked by fasting, repentance, and spiritual contemplation, as believers reflect on Christ’s immense sacrifice for the forgiveness of sins.

Whether through solemn processions or quiet prayer, Good Friday reminds us of the profound love and grace that Jesus showed through His suffering and death. It calls us to gratitude, humility, and renewed faith.

Peaceful Nawam PoyaDay.

Navam Full Moon Poya is marked with a public holiday in Sri Lanka. This poya day is usually celebrated on the first full moon in February, though in some years it can take place in late January.

Traditions of Navam Full Moon Poya

This full moon has special significance for Buddhists in Sri Lanka as it marks two important events. The first commemorates the appointment of Sariputta (Sariyuth) and Moggallana (Mugalan) as the first two chief disciples (Aggasavakes) of Gautama Buddha. Navam Poya also commemorates the first-ever Buddhist Council, held three months after the death of the Buddha. It was here where the Vinaya (the code of fundamental ethics for Buddhist monks) was proclaimed based on the teachings that the Buddha had passed onto his disciples.

In 1979, the first Navam Perahera (parade) took place at the Gangaramaya temple in Colombo. This perahera has grown to become one of the most popular and important pageants in Sri Lanka. The parade features hundreds of beautifully decorated elephants accompanied by whip crackers, fire dancers, flag bearers, traditional dancers and musicians.
