Can generative AI genuinely assess learning? Or does meaningful assessment require something uniquely human?

The PGIE was delighted to host Prof Priyanvada Abeywickrama (San Francisco State University, USA; 2026 Fulbright Specialist for Sri Lanka) on August 5th for an engaging and thought-provoking guest lecture on a timely topic in the field of education: ‘Classroom- Based Assessment Practices in the Era of Generative AI’. The session successfully explored what needs to change and what should remain to improve future classroom-based assessment practices, emphasising the importance of meaningful feedback and the enduring value of human-centred teaching in an AI-driven world.
