We have a graduation 🎓 🎉🎓
"Courage is proven by Deeds, not by empty words," My dad told me.

Siaka Kanneh has made me believe very strongly that anyone could achieve whatever they want, no matter the obstacles and challenges.

The struggle to obtain a degree 🎓 at the University of Liberia is an uphill task. With extreme physical Disability, Siaka has broken barriers to bag a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology.
It can be recorded that Siaka would peddle his wheelchair from across to get on campus. Craw up and down the stairs to attend classes.

Apart from the tussle to attend classes, Siaka was most faced with problems getting on campus. Most times, commercial cars will see it as a waste of time to stop for Siaka, fold his wheelchair, and place it in the car trunk with no extra charges. He would be left peddling from Redlight to Fendel.

The heartbroken moment in Siaka's educational journey came when he was exhausted one day from peddling his wheel to get on campus, he decided to stop at the Student bus stops 🚫 to use the bus and get on campus, but the rushing students who could not wait to onboard the bus, without any sense of humility and respect for one's dignity despite their condition, pushed Siaka in the pool of dirty water at the bus stops 🚫.
"It was only one lady who bought 5 dollars sachet of water to wash the dirt off my body since then I can never go to the bus stop to get a bus, I prefer to peddle my wheel to get on campus" Siaka narrated.

Before we talk about the scourge of discrimination, or mention the fully funded graduate scholarship provided for Siaka by the Dean of the Amos C. Sawyer College of Social Sciences and Humanities, Associate Professor, Dr. Josephus Gray, let's raise 200USD to support Siaka's graduation process.

UL Association of Students with Disability Certificates Associate Professor, Mrs. Saydah Williamson Taylor.

Today, our President, Perkins Boye led a four students delegation on the Capitol Hill campus of the University of Liberia. The President met and presented certificate of appreciation to Associate Professor, Mrs. Saydah Williamson Taylor, Director, Resource Center for Disability Support Services and Alternative Learning (RCDSSAL), Office of the President
University of Liberia.

Boye appreciated Mrs. Taylor for her relentless efforts aimed at creating a better learning environment for students with disability, and urged her to continue to drive such change, while congratulating her on her preferment as Director. He recounted the challenges students with disability continue to face while pursuing Tertiary education at the State-owned university. Boye named the lack of bathroom, transport services, inaccessibility of campus facilities, lack of policy to accommodate students with disability at UL and the lack of representation for students with disability at University of Liberia Students Union, as matters of concern.

Receiving the Certificate, Mrs. Taylor thanked the Leadership for recognizing her efforts in driving change at the University of Liberia. She assured the visiting students of her commitment to easing the burden that they and other students in their category continue to face on a daily busy while pursuing education.

Meanwhile, the delegation also met with the interim leadership of ULSU headed by Varfee Dukully, President. During the meeting, President Boye presented copy of their concerns to ULSU President, Varfee Dukully.

Receiving the document, Mr. Dukully assured the delegation that all concerns were legitimate and will be given due consideration by his leadership. He acknowledged the absence of students with disability representation at the level of ULSU, but promised to act swiftly to be included in the ongoing constitutional revision of the Union. He applauded Mr. Boye and the visiting delegation for their courage to beat the odds and become exemplary students at the University.

We thank everyone who continue to stand by and with us in this drive.

We are cognizant that change doesn't come easy, but with resolved and persistence, change is inevitable!

On last Thursday, February 2, we welcomed the National Lottery Authorities, Chairmen of departments, including the Dean of the Prof. Amos C. Sawyer of Social Sciences and Humanities, Associated Professor Dr. Josephus Gray.

We also had in attendance, the newly formed Director of Disability, Research and Alternative Learning at the University of Liberia, Mrs. Saydah Williamson Taylor.

It was awesome 👍 when students with disabilities at the state-run University met with representatives from the National Lottery Authority. The meeting was intended to acquaint the NLA, under the Director General Ship of Reginald Nagbe, with pressing challenges being faced by the students while pursuing higher education.

We applaud the NLA for taking so much interest in our issues while assuring us of their relentless assistance as long we continue to strive for quality education.

We invite the general public to the grand launching of the Association, which happens to be first of its kind in any public University in the country.
The Association will be the voice of learners with Disability pursuing higher education.

University of Liberia Association of Students With Disability (ULASD) extends gratitude to the Devine Connection Church in Kentucky, USA.

Not too long ago, our dynamic President, Perkins ET. Boye began a discussion with Mr. Augustus Bannie, acquainting him with the difficulties members of the Association is faced with and made a passionate plead for his institution to provide some assistive devices ( Wheelchair, Crutches, and Reading glasses) to members of the Association for movement to class, from, and to campuses are and continued to be a major constraint. Fortunately, our pleading didn't go unnoticed by Augustus Bannie. During the discussion, about four months ago, he assured the Association that they will make some intervention in providing wheelchairs, crutches, and reading glasses for students with disability on the Campuses of the University of Liberia.

True to his words, I have seen in person these materials being freed at the Freeport of Monrovia and will be donated to the Association Leadership on September 28, 2022, at a program in the Executive Lounge, Administrative Complex, on the Fendell Campus. The program will also be used to Launch the Association and raise 300,000 to set up an office that would assist with planning courses and attending online classes by the Association members (Mobile money #: 0888-877-397).

Indeed, there's a Devine connection in all this. Before our discussion Months Ago, I had never seen nor known Mr. Bannie, but God has his way of solving problems at his appointed time.

Again, I will let the general public know that, while buses have been provided for our comrades who don't have any disability, students with disability continue to struggle to get on campus because of the lack of buses. The fight that goes on at the University bus stops should be enough reasons for any Administration to think twice to provide a 14-seated bus 🚌 that will ease the transportation burden on students with disability.

Today, we have countable 21 students with disability in the Association, excluding the SenJay campus and others being enrolled. I, therefore, call on the Administration to provide an exclusive bus to be used by students with disability.

"The true humanity of a country is seen in how it treats its vulnerable citizens" but don't confuse vulnerability for weakness, it is a sign of Strength. You are pushing us!

We will hold a major program in the ACG auditorium, on the Fendel campus of the University of Liberia on September 28, 2022. We continue to experience difficulties commuting to and from our classes due to a lack of transportation.

This program will raise three hundred thousand (300,000.00 LRD) or its equivalent in United States dollars (2,000LRD) to provide transport and registration fees to our members who continue to experience the harsh realities of a worsening economy. You can support this drive ahead of the main event.

Transportation remains our nightmare!
