On Monday, 31 August, Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) officially marked the start of the 2026/2027 academic year. Nearly 3,000 first-year students are joining the university community this year, including 465 international students from 41 countries.

What should every new medical student know before the first lecture even begins?

At Welcome Week, Vice Dean for International Students at the RSU Faculty of Medicine Dr. Smuidra Žermanos spoke to our new students about what the next six years will ask of them - and what they can expect from us in return.

Take your studies seriously from day one. Learn Latvian. Know the rules. Building connections beyond your own community. And when something becomes difficult, ask for help.

These may sound like simple pieces of advice. Together, they say something important about studying medicine at RSU: take responsibility for your journey, but don’t think you have to make it alone.

🇩🇪 A new country feels a little less unfamiliar when you know who is there for you.

During Welcome Week, representatives of the German Embassy in Latvia welcomed RSU’s first-year German students to Riga and wished them a great start to the new academic year.

Their message was simple: know where to find us and when you can turn to us.

Students were also encouraged to become an active part of the German student community at RSU, build connections with one another, and stay connected with the wider German community in Latvia - including the German Embassy and Goethe-Institut Riga.

Because studying abroad is not only about finding your way around a new university and a new city. It is also about building a network of people and places that can make Riga feel a little more like home.

From RSU and our new German students — thank you to the German Embassy in Latvia for being there from the very beginning.

Ein neues Land fühlt sich gleich ein bisschen vertrauter an, wenn man weiß, an wen man sich wenden kann.

Die Deutsche Botschaft in Lettland begrüßte unsere deutschen Erstsemester in Riga und wünschte ihnen einen guten Start ins neue Studienjahr.

Dabei ging es nicht nur darum, wann und wie die Botschaft unterstützen kann. Die Studierenden wurden auch ermutigt, sich aktiv in die deutsche Studierendengemeinschaft an der RSU einzubringen, Kontakte zu knüpfen und mit der deutschen Community in Lettland verbunden zu bleiben.

What does starting university in a new country actually look like?

A lot of new faces. A new city. A new university. Probably quite a few questions. And then you start meeting people.

This week, 464 new international students from 39 countries came together at RSU for Welcome Week. They explored the university and Riga, met their groupmates, asked questions, tried new things, laughed, competed, talked – and started finding their people.

By the end of the week, 84% told us they felt more confident about starting their life in Riga. But one student put it better than any statistic could: “The fact that I actually felt welcome.”

🕯 Norwegian students are an important part of the RSU community, and we stand with them as they mourn the passing of His Majesty King Harald V.

We extend our deepest sympathies to our Norwegian students and their families, and to the people of Norway at this time of national mourning.

King Harald V served his country for more than 35 years. He will be remembered for his lifelong dedication to Norway and its people.
