Our study programmes provide students with a solid base of anthropological knowledge and research skills at the University of Latvia.

The page presents an informal group of university anthropologists. The study programme provides students with a solid base of anthropological knowledge and research skills upon which to build in their later academic or professional career. It covers both the main themes in anthropological theory, economic and political anthropology, as well as anthropology of gender and religion, and thus helps st

udents to develop critical thinking and interdisciplinary analysis skills. The programme is mostly orientated towards public anthropology and the Baltic region, but students are encouraged to develop and explore their own research topics with the support of experienced supervisors within our department. Our senior programme staff holds doctoral degrees from world’s best ranking universities and are active in the public sphere, encouraging also their students to express their opinions and research results in the mass media. The programme uses its ERASMUS exchange agreements to send students to other European universities and welcomes students from abroad visiting Latvia.

Šogad EASA konferencē piedalās rekordliels skaits Latvijas antropologu. Plenārlekcija uzticēta latviešu antropoloģei Dacei Dzenovskai (Oksfordas universitāte). Publiskās antropoloģijas grupu pārstāvēja Aivita Putniņa, runājot par ar zinātni saistītu populismu un autoritāritārismu. Līdzīgi procesi, taču nacionāli atšķirīgiem scenārijiem notiek arī citviet Eiropā. Rītdienas uzbrukums zinātniekiem atcelts, varbūt palika kauns. Formāli - Valsts kontrole nespēs ierasties. Meļņa kungs no ZZS paliks ar neapmierinātu “interesi” par pētījumu virsrakstiem.

Political pressure on anthropology continues. The Public Expenditure and Audit Commission of the Latvian Parliament is reviewing science funding on 22 July, with a particular focus on three projects that began last year. Two of them address gender and heteronormativity, and two are anthropological. The Parliament has requested information about their "funding amounts, purpose, evaluation criteria, planned results, selected international experts, deadlines, monitoring mechanisms, etc".

Politiskais spiediens uz zinātni turpinās. Saeimas Publisko izdevumu un revīzijas komisijas 22. jūlija sēdē tiks izskatīti FLPP projekti ar īpašu uzsvaru uz trīs projektiem: 1) Antidženderisma diskurss Latvijas publiskajā telpā un literatūrā; 2) Viena dzimuma partnerības: antropoloģisks pētījums par bērna audzināšanu ārpus heteronormatīvas vides; 3) Rūpes par demokrātiju: dzīves radīšanas prakses ģeopolitiskā neskaidrība (LALIFE). Divi no šiem projektiem ir antropoloģiski un tiem tik skatīts "finansējuma apmērs, mērķis, vērtēšanas kritēriji, plānotie rezultāti, izraudzītie starptautiskie eksperti, izpildes termiņi, uzraudzības mehānismi u.tml".

Līdz nesenai pagātnei viena no galvenajām kultūratsaucēm, domājot par nažiem Latvijā, bija Ginta Gabrāna 1995. gada instalācija "N***s, ar ko sev sagraizīt dirsu". Nu šim darbam konkurenci radījis dziļi zīmīgais žests, kad pēc iekšlietu ministra Jāņa Dombravas vizītes patvērum...

A lovely session in the political and legal anthropology course for bachelors students when Alison Dillane, deputy head of mission at the Embassy of Ireland came to discuss life in the European institutions with us, and her experience of diplomacy. Thanks to Alison for giving of her time and being so insightful and open, and thanks to our great students for really great engagement!

Everyone is cordially invited to Dr Ritu Khanduri's guest lecture on Gandhi and the Material World on Thursday, 12 March, at 8 pm at Lauvas iela 4, Room 204. It will be a 30-40 minute event, after which the normally scheduled anthropology of consumption lecture will continue for students.
