🔍This year's ViA - Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences VR/AR Hackathon focused on healthcare challenges and the potential of virtual and augmented reality technologies to address them.

The hackathon brought together 15 teams and more than 60 participants, including international BIP students from 12 countries – Iran, Belarus, France, Lithuania, Portugal, Albania, Türkiye, Poland, India, Jordan, Romania, and Rwanda – alongside participants from Latvia.🌍

🏆The winning solution was developed by the international student team "Wheel Care – Wheelchair Training in XR", addressing a challenge jointly proposed by UniHaus and Vidzeme Hospital. The team consisted of Yassin Derkhoui, Theodore Condette, Joseph Gervais, Leopold Latona, and Amir Mahan Ziaee.

“Learning how to operate a wheelchair is not easy, especially after a stroke. There is often a lack of physical space where people can practice, so our goal was to make this process more accessible and effective. Maneuvering a wheelchair is a significant challenge, and many people do not realize how much hand coordination it requires,” explained the team.

During this academic year, staff received support from the "Accelerate Future HEI" project to participate in supervision sessions, while heads of departments took part in training aimed at enhancing their competencies in team leadership, strategic thinking, communication, and personal effectiveness. 🤝

As part of the training programme, participants explored leadership roles and management models, principles of effective team management, strategic decision-making, handling complex situations, leading emotionally challenging conversations, providing constructive feedback, and strengthening self-effectiveness and self-motivation skills.

🗨️ “Developing these skills helps managers lead their teams more successfully, make well-considered decisions, and effectively address complex situations. The knowledge gained strengthens both personal leadership and the overall development of the organisation, fostering a purposeful, supportive, and collaborative work environment,” says Agita Šmitiņa.

One of the key objectives of the “Accelerate Future HEI” project is to strengthen the management and leadership skills of senior staff within higher education institutions.

🎓 We were pleased to welcome Prof. Zeev (Vladimir) Volkovich from Braude College of Engineering, Karmiel, Israel, a partner institution of , for the seminar "Hyperbolic Citation Networks and AI-Assisted Generative Learning."

The seminar explored cutting-edge deep learning approaches for detecting anomalous and potentially manipulated citations in scientific literature. Participants gained insights into graph neural networks, hyperbolic geometry, Node2Vec embeddings, graph transformers, temporal graph analysis, and AI-assisted model development. The presentation also highlighted the responsible use of AI tools in research, addressing key topics such as ethics, reliability, and reproducibility.🤝

On 3 June, within the framework of the Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programme (BIP), Prof. Volkovich also delivered a lecture on "Introduction to Generative Deep Learning," introducing participants to the fundamentals and latest developments in generative AI.

The Erasmus+ BIP (BIP ID: 2025-1-LV01-KA131-HED-000332159-3) at ViA takes place from 3–7 June, bringing together students and academics for an intensive week of learning, collaboration, and innovation in artificial intelligence and emerging technologies.

☕️ On May 5, the first networking breakfast of the Valmiera Innovation Quarter took place, bringing together entrepreneurs, innovation enthusiasts, students, and professionals from various industries to meet in an informal atmosphere, exchange experiences, and build new collaborations.

The idea of creating VIK (Valmiera Innovation Quarter) has been discussed among different audiences for some time, and now it is taking the next step — from concept to action. As the first supporters of the initiative, Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences and the Valmiera Development Agency have decided to test and develop this vision in practice, creating an environment where knowledge, entrepreneurship, and innovation come together. 🚀

During the networking breakfast, participants had the opportunity to discuss innovation development in Vidzeme, collaboration opportunities, and future initiatives, while also strengthening a community where new ideas, projects, and valuable connections can emerge.

🤝 The event took place within the framework of the Accelerate Future HEI project: https://acceleratefuturehei.eu/
