STANDING FIRM

I. INTRODUCTION

a. Some are fighting wars today in Afghanistan and Iraq against terrorism. Soldiers are prepared for battle. (They have 50 lbs of gear, night goggles, humvies, special helicopters, etc.)
b. We are fighting a war with Satan in this life. In 2nd Timothy 2:3, we read that we should endure hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.
c. We need to know our adversary – the Devil or Satan
d. We know that he:
• Knows our weaknesses - James 1:14-15
• Knows when we are the weakest – Matt. 4:1-3
• Know that he is in our bedroom – 1st Cor. 7:5
• He was with Jesus in the wilderness, on the temple, and the mountain top-Matt. 4:1-11
• He is constantly looking for men to devour – 1st Peter 5:8
• He knows the Bible, quotes it and plays with doctrine – Example: You will not surely die – Gen. 3:4, Matt. 4:6
• He is The ruler of demons – Luke 11:15
• He is The ruler of this world – John 16:11
• He is The god of this world or age – 2nd Cor. 4:4
• He is The prince of the power of the air –Eph. 2:2
• But We know he will go to everlasting fire or Hell – Matt. 25:41
e. We need to stand our ground or stand firm

II. OUR ARMOR

Ephesians 6:10-13 (Read it all) tells us we are in a hand to hand combat with the devil and we need proper armor to fight him. Verse 11 says, “Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the whiles (craftiness of the devil). Vs 13 “Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day and having done all, to stand.” Vs 14 “Stand therefore,

A. Waist – The Belt of Truth
1. In John 8:32 it says “The truth will make you free.”
2. In John 14:6 “I am the Way the Truth and the Life”
Without a belt, your whole garment may fall off, so we need the truth
B. Breastplate of righteousness
1. We need to protect our internal organs – heart
C. Shoes on your feet – Gospel of Peace
We need proper shoes or we will injure our feet and we can’t stand. (Wayne played baseball on his very small country school’s 8th grade team. They played without shoes because they couldn’t afford them. When they played the schools in town, they had cleats, so they would purposely step on their feet as they rounded bases.) We must teach the Gospel, which is a gospel of Peace. It makes a whole nation peaceful.
The terrorists have a very violent religion.
D. Shield of Faith -To guard against the fiery darts of the devil.
Faith is what keeps us grounded, like a tree, faith is the root. No faith, no actions - A half-hearted effort.
E. Helmet of Salvation –
Protect your head – thinking part of you (I keep bees and I had a veil, but didn’t buy the hard hat, I didn’t realize the importance, until one day several bees stung me on the top of my head and it was very painful.)
1. Habakkuk 3:18 – God and Jesus give us our salvation
2. We have joy and we know we are saved.
F. Sword of the Spirit – The word of God- Our main weapon
Our only offensive weapon.
1. Remember Jesus – Matt. 4:14 – He said “It is written” when confronted with Satan.
2. If we don’t know it, we can’t quote it.
G. Pray Often – Be watchful, speak boldly, make your requests known unto God. Phil. 4:6

III. BIBLICAL EXAMPLES OF PEOPLE WHO STOOD FIRM FOR GOD
A. Joseph – Gen. 39:9 “How can I sin against God? He stood firm.
B. Joshua – Joshua 24:15 Gods before the flood (river Euphrates or in Egypt, gods in whose land you now dwell ( Ammonites) - (pictures of idols) Many people today worship idols – in America – it’s money, leisure, family, c lothes, music, TV– anything that you put ahead of God. –
C. David – I Samuel 17: 45-47 Goliath, Did you know David fought other giants? See if you can find them.
D. Daniel – Daniel 1:8 –Food, Daniel 6:10-28 – Prayed 3 times each day

IV. MODERN DAY EXAMPLES OF PEOPLE WHO STOOD FIRM FOR GOD
A. P.R. Swamy was a Hindu, becoming a doctor, but his wife taught him the Bible and he became a Christian. They wouldn’t let him graduate medical school and his family disowned him. He became a preacher and helped cure sick souls. In his lifetime he has had a hand in baptizing over 65,000 people.
B. Even though it is illegal to teach the Bible in Vietnam, a man there travels once a year on a motor cycle from the bottom of the country to the top and visits with all of those that he knows are Christians, just to keep them encouraged.

V. CONCLUSION
Stand firm today – We are fighting a war! We have many different temptations:

• Gossip
• Dirty jokes
• Cursing
• Drugs
• Bad TV shows
• Bad Movies
• Bad music
• Immodest Clothes
• Not obeying elders of the congregation
• Fornication
• Adultery
• Cheating
• Lying
• Not teaching others
• Not obeying parents
• Envying our friends’ clothes, houses, things
• Not attending worship
• Only being a Christian on Sunday
• Not being active in our congregation
• Not visiting sick - hospital, prison
• Not taking food to those who are sick
• Not giving at least 10 % (In the O.T. they really gave about 30% - Do better than the Old Testament)
• Not putting God first
• When you wake up – do you say, “God what do you want me to do today?”

We are faced with the same temptations that Christ had – flesh, eye, pride of life. This life is very short, a very small part of the eternity that we will live. When you get in your 50’s, you begin to realize this even more. Our life really is a v***r. Let us stand firm for God in our fight with the devil.

Women in the Congregation

In our changing times, women sometimes are called on to interact in the assembly in a way that is not consistent with the Bible. In 1st Timothy 2:12-13, Paul says, “And I do not permit a woman to teach over to have authority over a man,but to be in silence. For Adam was formed first, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived fell into transgression”. Some may ask, “What if a man asks me to pray or to lead in the worship service?” Even if a man asks you to preach or pray when men are present, we still cannot do it, because the Bible tells us not to be over the man and to be silent. They may say, “The man asaked me to, so he gave me permission.” But, “We ought to obey God rather than men,” Acts 5:29.Also, in I Corinthians 14:34-35, “Let your woman keep silent in the churches, for they are not permitted to speak;but they are to be submissive, as the law also says, And if they want to learn something, let them ask their own husbands at home; for it is shameful for women to speak in church.”

Rather than dwell on what women cannot do, it is better to think about what all they can do! We have so much to do what we don’t need to even think about doing the work of men. What can a woman do?

1. Attend every service of the congregation where you attend.
2. Participate by singing, praying silently, listening to the
sermon, giving, partake of the Lord’s Supper, and listen to the
reading of the Bible.
3. If married, support your husband in his work in the congregation,
4. If you are a preacher or evangelist’s wife, support him.Don’t nag
about wanting him to stay home and not travel all over the country
teaching and preaching. Go with him when possible and teach the
women and children.Grade Bible correspondence courses to help
teach others.
5. Be and encouranger of others, like Barnabus. Encourange the
preacher/teacher/ evangelist.
6. Prepare a place for preachers, evangelists and Christians who travel
through your town. Feed them; provide a room for them and good
food. Give the evangelist money for their travel.Give them money for
the poor or for children. The evangelist sees may who need help
and it hurts him when he doesn’t have the money to help them.
You may not have a lot of money but anything helps.
7. Make clothes, blankets, etc, to give to the poor or widows or buy
clothes for them.
8. Provide a place for the church to meet and keep it clean and ready.
9. Prepare the Lord’s Supper each Sunday, or take turns preparing it
with other women in the congregation. Teach the younger women
how to make the bread.
10. Teach your children how to help others. Your sons could help
widows by cutting and carrying wood for fires to cook with.
Your daughters could help make blankets to keep warm.
11. Take food or money to the hospital to those in need. Take your
children with you . Let them see you working for God.
