The Faculty of Media and Knowledge Sciences (MAKS) was established in 2011 to offer academic program The first cohort graduating with a B.

The University of Malta Council set up the Faculty of Media and Knowledge Sciences (MAKS) as the thirteenth Faculty of this University on 27 January 2011. MAKS was to take over the objectives of the Centre for Communication Technology (CCT), which it replaces, within a wider research agenda. The University of Malta had created the Centre for Communication Technology (CCT) on 29 May 1991 in respons

e to the growing need for the use of modern media in Maltese society. Between 1991 and 2010, CCT operated a three-pronged mission:
formation of personnel capable of understanding the media context and creating media products
undertaking of collaborative research work in the broad area of communications and
providing consultancy about, and management of campus instructional resources and spaces. During these years, the focus on Communication Studies at the University of Malta developed from a few lectures within the Department of Philosophy, to an area of study within the Faculty of Arts (up to 1997) to a dual-subject degree within the CCT. A department of Communication was initially set up within the Faculty of Education (1997-1999) and then moved into the CCT. Communication four-year Honours programme completed their studies in 1994. In 1999 the Division of Library and Information Studies and the Law and Information Technology Unit were created within the CCT. This brought within CCT areas relating to knowledge and information management and the wider societal and legal implications and applications of communication systems. Today MAKS builds on the legacy of the CCT to promote research and skills required in a knowledge-based society that values the creative industries.

The Erasmus+ SUMED project has officially concluded after three years dedicated to making media education more sustainable and socially responsible. Led by INNOCAMP.PL and involving partners from Poland, Finland, Malta and Spain, the project introduced new training, curricula and five open-access MOOCs focused on sustainable media practice. The final meeting was held at the University of Gdańsk in October 2025, with all project resources remaining accessible through the SUMED knowledge repository until April 2028.
