The Department of Gerontology and Dementia Studies was set up as the Institute of Gerontology in 1989 to develop inter-disciplinary teaching, education and research in a wide range of areas in the fields of gerontology and geriatrics. The Department serves as an international and interdisciplinary research centre that investigates key issues concerning older persons, later life and ageing. Through
high quality research and postgraduate training, the Department contributes to a better understanding of the experience of ageing amongst different nations, societies and cultures, which in turn puts policy makers in a better strategic position to contribute towards improved policies for later life. A key objective of the Department is to produce qualified and trained personnel engaged in the provision and planning of services to older persons in the statutory, voluntary and private sectors. The emphasis is on basic gerontological training aimed at giving a better understanding of the various aspects of ageing and the needs of older persons, as well as the necessary skills to meet these needs adequately, thus improving their quality of life and wellbeing. The Department of Gerontology and Dementia Studies offers four academic programmes - namely, Higher Diploma in Gerontology and Geriatrics, Master of Gerontology and Geriatrics, Master of Arts in Ageing and Dementia Studies, and Doctorate. The Higher Diploma in Gerontology and Geriatrics caters for students who have completed their higher education and are looking to expand their knowledge of gerontology and geriatrics through a recognised university programme. It targets persons already working with older persons and in the field of ageing, those who wish to work with older persons, and others who wish to commence their studies in the field of gerontology and geriatrics. The Master of Gerontology and Geriatrics presents a unique opportunity for systematic interdisciplinary training in ageing studies. This postgraduate degree provides excellent academic opportunities for linking theory and practice in gerontology and geriatrics, whilst the scheduled Practice Placements also grant students first-hand experience in innovative practices, service planning and delivery settings in ageing welfare. The Master of Arts in Ageing and Dementia Studies is targeted at professionals involved in the bio-psycho-social care of older persons, and offers an opportunity to advance careers by enhancing professional clinical practice to improve the required skills in generating and delivering better levels of care. Further studies leading up to a Ph.D. are also offered under the auspices of the Faculty for Social Wellbeing.
