Theatre Studies at UM

Theatre Studies at UM Welcome to the Theatre Studies Department - University of Malta Students wishing to work within the cultural and creative industries, in Europe and the U.S.

The Theatre Studies Course aims at giving students a comprehensive knowledge of theatre and drama as performance activities and to present theatre as a living organism within society. The changing role of actors and performers, the development of spatial performance structures, and the relationship between theatre, society, politics and philosophy, is analysed and discussed. In line with the most

recent developments in the field of Performance Studies the course investigates the roots of theatre activity and the genealogy of theatrical performance in relation to religious, political, and social structures. The programme also focuses on the relationship of theatre with the associated arts of music and dance. In this respect it investigates contemporary theories and studies recent practices also within the context of newly emergent digital media. In a time of over-specialisation, the course aims at cultivating an interdisciplinary approach which makes students open to different disciplines. The programme locates theatre and performance within the context of cultural and creative industries and equips students with the basic critical and practical tools to operate within this sector. Prospective students include anyone interested in activities related to theatre and performance, culture and the arts. Young individuals with no previous experience and mature persons, who have been active in the field but desire relevant theoretical and updated practical skills, are equally eligible to enrol. are normally requested to show that they have followed studies related to the performing arts which the Theatre Studies course includes within its programme.

REFLECTION AND REVELATION

Theatre Studies Year 1 Festival

Date: 22 May

Time: 19:30

Venue: Valletta Campus Theatre

To book a place kindly send an email to [email protected].

Suggested donation at the door 5€.

The performances you will see explore the themes of reflection and revelation. While we move forward with our everyday lives, we also have the opportunity to look back at important moments and possibly rediscover something new to help us face the future. During these forty-five minutes, we will have the chance to understand how we look at love; see people coping with stress during an interrogation; learn about people who lived through a war; understand the ill effects of violence on women; and sense the fallout of former students digging up a time capsule.

STAFF PUBLICATIONS

Check out Frank Camilleri's latest article 'Stanislavsky from the Outside: Networking and Re-Working the Self', which has just been published in the latest issue of *Stanislavski Studies*, 14:1 (Routledge). The article presents an outsider’s perspective on aspects of Stanislavsky’s approach, specifically with reference to the fundamental notion of the actor’s work on the self. Starting off with a personal anecdote about a movement-based exercise, Stanislavsky’s work upon the self is identified as a key formative element that is then highlighted in the context of resonances between aesthetic and athletic processes.

UM students and staff can access the article via institutional access here: https://www-tandfonline-com.ejournals.um.edu.mt/doi/full/10.1080/20567790.2025.2594801 .

A limited number of free online copies are available here: https://www.tandfonline.com/eprint/SQCCUZQV4YZFKDQQS5DT/full?target=10.1080/20567790.2025.2594801.

[The image is an AI-generated one that Camilleri used in his keynote speech on the same subject during the S Word Symposium held in November 2025: Stanislavsky's work upon the self re-envisaged as a juggling networking of the self.]
