Oceanography Malta Group at UM

Oceanography Malta Group at UM The Oceanography Malta Research Group (ex-PO Res Grp & ex-Physical Oceanography Unit) is established

The OM Research Group's main areas of concern include the strengthening of inter-faculty co-operation in marine affairs within the University, the organisation of training courses, sustaining the interaction between local institutions that are active in marine affairs, and promoting an inter-sectorial approach at a national level. It also undertakes fundamental research in coastal meteorology, hyd

rography and physical oceanography with a main emphasis on the experimental study of the hydrodynamics of the sea in the vicinity of the Maltese Islands. It offers facilities for the gathering, processing, analysis and management of high quality physical oceanographic observations both for long term and baseline studies as well as for general applications in marine environmental research and assessments. Several online services are offered on the dedicated portal (www.capemalta.net) where direct access is provided to meteo-marine observations and forecasts.

Habitat loss remains one of the main threats to biodiversity, but solutions can start with small actions πŸŒŠβ€οΈβ€πŸ©Ή

To counteract this impact along the coast of Palermo, out partners from IAS CNR installed artificial substrates to promote the recruitment of vermetid snails, which will then support the recolonization of degraded vermetid reefs.

During the installation, temperature sensors were also deployed to monitor environmental conditions, and photoquadrats were used to characterize the habitat.

This action is part of the REVIVE 🐚 project, where innovative restoration meets science to bring marine life back to degraded habitats πŸ«±πŸ»β€πŸ«²πŸΌ

Our research group, the Oceanography Malta Research Group, within the Department of Geosciences at the University of Malta, is a partner within the REVIVE project, financed through the 2021-2027 Interreg Italia-Malta Programme....

OMRG is proud to present the International and Second Place Winners of our World Ocean Day Competition 2026! 🌊

A big congratulations to the students of 6th Junior High School, Heraklion, Crete, Greece, whose creative and thoughtful video impressed the judges and earned them this recognition. πŸŽ‰

Their work demonstrates a strong awareness of the importance of our oceans and the need to protect marine environments for future generations. It is especially encouraging to see students from different countries taking part in this initiative, proving that care for the ocean transcends borders and brings young people together around a common cause. πŸŒπŸ’™

We are now looking forward to arranging the delivery of the World Ocean Review book collection, kindly provided by the International Ocean Institute (IOI), to enrich the school's library and support continued learning about the ocean.

Congratulations once again on this fantastic achievement! πŸ†

Last Friday, the Oceanography Malta Research Group (OMRG) was happy to welcome students and teachers from the Mediterranean College of Sport, First winners of our World Ocean Day Competition 2026, for a small awards ceremony at the University of Malta.

The event was attended by Prof. Valerie Sollars (Pro-Rector for Strategic Planning and Sustainability), Prof. Alan Deidun (Rector's Delegate for SEA-EU), and Mr Cosmin Nicolae Chivu from the International Ocean Institute (IOI).

Students received their individual prizes, while the school's library was awarded the complete World Ocean Review book collection, generously provided by the IOI. The ceremony also provided an opportunity to discuss sustainability, ocean literacy, and the importance of protecting our marine environment.

Congratulations once again to all the students and teachers involved. Your passion for the ocean inspires us all! πŸŒπŸ’™

Really sad news coming in from the US at the moment!

The Trump administration is dismantling a $368 million deep-ocean observation system to monitor coastal environments, marine ecosystems and powerful currents that affect the global climate. The National Science Foundation said it would send ships in June to begin removing more than 900 deep-sea instruments anchored off Oregon, Washington State, Alaska, North Carolina, and an area between Greenland and Iceland.

The $368 million network of instruments collecting data in both the Atlantic and Pacific has been critical to climate and ocean research.
