Counselling at UM

Counselling at UM The Department of Counselling forms part of the Faculty for Social Wellbeing at the University of Malta

The Department of Counselling strives to educate and equip future counsellors with the necessary skills and capacities to provide a sound counselling service. The courses offered provide students with the opportunity to work with clients in a variety of social settings, whilst also allowing time to explore specialised areas of counselling. In addition, the courses prepare trainee counsellors to ad

dress ethical issues they may encounter, as well as promoting counsellors’ continued training and self-development even after their graduation. The research component trains counsellors to make valuable academic contributions to the theoretical and applied fields of counselling, and to the social world at large. The courses successively bring together students from various backgrounds and diverse nationalities, offering an interesting, challenging and diverse learning environment. The Department prides itself in offering courses that are hands-on as well as academic, and provides the opportunity for trainee counsellors to learn from practice, as well as theory. The varied and fully qualified lecturing staff specialise in the units taught and provide quality teaching and up-to-date material. The Department also organises lectures and seminars by renowned international academics and counsellors to promote further development. Further to its courses in Counselling, the Department also co-ordinates teacher training in Personal and Social Development at graduate and post-graduate level. These courses currently train secondary school teachers in developing self awareness and social competencies to be able to promote and deliver personal and social education in schools. Skills learned aim to develop knowledgeable, reflective and professional secondary school educators. This website will guide you through an overview of the teaching and research work of the Department of Counselling within the University of Malta. Embracing Neurodiversity

2025 Annual Conference of the Maltese Association of Psychiatry
Old University Campus, Valletta – 16th & 17th October 2025

Neurodiversity recognises that variations in neurological development and functioning—including autism, ADHD, dyslexia, Tourette’s syndrome, and other cognitive profiles—are part of the natural spectrum of human diversity. Rather than pathologizing difference, a neurodiversity-affirming perspective values the strengths, insights, and lived experiences of neurodivergent individuals, while also acknowledging the challenges they may face in navigating systems not built with them in mind.

As mental health professionals, we have a responsibility to engage with this evolving paradigm—one that calls for respectful, person-centred, and strengths-based care. This conference offers a space for critical reflection and collaborative learning as we explore the clinical, ethical, cultural, and social dimensions of neurodiversity.

The Call for Abstracts for the MAP's Annual Conference 2025 is now open.
