Our institution bears the name of an eminent personality, Manilal Maganlal Shah, a highly respected Indian barrister, who came to Mauritius on the advice of Mahatma Gandhi on 11th October 1907 to figh
t against the injustice perpetrated on Indian indentured labourers as well as others. History bears witness to his talents as a lawyer, the might of his pen as an editor and his oratorical skills to achieve his aims. He helped to arouse the conscience of the Mauritian people during his stay on the island. However his short stay was of great historical significance for the Indian community and for the country also. During these four years, the achievements of Manilal Doctor were immense.
