August 23rd marks UNESCO’s International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition. Today, we remember the victims of slavery and honour their courage, resilience, and resistance.

The effects of slavery can extend across generations, shaping trauma, identity, wellbeing, and social experiences. Understanding these psychological impacts helps us recognise the lasting effects of oppression.

Although slavery has been abolished, modern forms of slavery continue to affect people worldwide. Remembering the past helps us understand the present. 🧠

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and the UoM Psychology Society is highlighting the importance of understanding, openness, and support around mental health. 💚

Mental health is part of everyday life—it affects how we think, feel, and connect with others. Starting conversations, listening without judgement, and being aware of our own wellbeing can make a real difference.

Let’s work towards a campus culture where mental health is talked about openly and support is easy to access when needed.

Mental health matters.🩵💚

As we take a moment to say goodbye, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to everyone who contributed to the success of this mandate. To the members of the Psychology Society, thank you for showing up, engaging with our events, and nurturing a genuine interest in psychology and mental health. It truly meant a lot to us. 🥹

We are equally grateful to all the societies we collaborated with. Working alongside you has been a valuable learning experience for our executive team, and we appreciate the support and shared efforts throughout.

Lastly, we extend our heartfelt thanks to the Student Union members, staff, lecturers at FSSH, and most especially our advisor, Dr. Fiona Grant, for your trust, encouragement, and belief in our initiatives and capabilities. 😊

Throughout this mandate, we have made meaningful strides in raising awareness about mental health and helping others better understand what psychology truly represents. Still, we know there is so much more that can be done. While we may not be here to witness what comes next, it is our hope that this society continues to grow and stands at the forefront of psychology and mental health on campus. 🧠✨
