π Fractions of an Amount: a full breakdown as exams approach.
A girl spent 1/3 of her money on books and 1/6 of it on pencils. (a) What fraction of her money did she spend? (b) What fraction of her money had she left?
This question tests two skills at once: adding fractions with different denominators, then treating the whole as 1 to work out what remains. Forgetting that second step is where most students lose the marks for part (b).
In this video, we walk through both parts step by step, from finding a common denominator to checking that the spent and remaining fractions add up to the whole.
