STEM Future Dialogue-Inspiring the Next Generation of Women in STEM

The Doctoral School of the University of Mauritius hosted the STEM Future Dialogue on Wednesday 03 June 2026, bringing together 80 students from 22 public and private secondary schools across Mauritius for a morning of inspiration, discovery and meaningful dialogue.

A key feature of the event was its youth-to-youth approach, providing secondary school students with the opportunity to interact directly with doctoral students and recent PhD graduates who, not so long ago, were themselves sitting in secondary school classrooms.

Through their stories, experiences and achievements, our young researchers demonstrated that STEM careers are both accessible and rewarding.

Highlights of the programme included:
- Addresses by the Vice-Chancellor and Pro Vice-Chancellors (Academia)
- Inspiring testimonies from PhD alumni Dr Yusra Ruhomally and Dr Devina Lobine
- A panel discussion featuring current doctoral students from different faculties sharing their research journeys, challenges and aspirations

Organised by the Doctoral School with the support of the SADC Women in Science, Engineering and Technology Organisation (WISETO) Initiative of the Ministry of Tertiary Education, Science and Research, the event aimed to encourage more young girls to pursue studies and careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

Supporting Young Scientists: University of Mauritius contributes to Science Quest Victory through Community Engagement

The University of Mauritius, through its Faculty of Science, is proud to have supported students of secondary schools participating in the Rajiv Gandhi Science Quest 2026.

This commitment was reflected in the success of a project from Notre Dame College, "The Great Metal Escape Featuring Algae – A Natural Solution against Heavy Metal Pollution", which won the Gold Award (First Prize) in Category 1 on 28 May 2026.

Through its Department of Chemistry, the Faculty of Science provided laboratory facilities, technical support and scientific expertise to help the students investigate the use of algae to remove copper contamination from seawater. The Department also supported a student from Doha College, Souillac, by providing access to advanced spectroscopy facilities for the analysis of biodegradable plastics.

Supported by the Faculty's leadership and technical staff, these collaborations gave students access to state-of-the-art facilities and advanced analytical instrumentation to enhance the scientific rigour of their projects and help them transform innovative ideas into meaningful scientific investigations.

The University warmly congratulates the students and educators of Notre Dame College on this outstanding achievement and remains committed to supporting initiatives that promote scientific literacy, innovation and research among young people.

Together, we continue to inspire the next generation of scientists and innovators for a more sustainable future. 🌱🔬
