The University of Mauritius (UoM) is sited at Reduit, a small town in the heart of Mauritius. At first, the university had three schools, namely Agriculture, Administration and Industrial Technology. With time it has expanded to comprise five Faculties, namely Agriculture, Engineering, Law and Management, Science, and Social Studies & Humanities. ching the university is making use of Innovative Learning Technologies like distance education and online learning. Over the years, UoM has evolved into being the number one University of the land, focusing on research and consultancy and the development of undergraduate and postgraduate programme of studies to meet the requirements of the Mauritian economy. The programmes offered by the university are internationally recognised and include quality assurance mechanisms such as the external examiner system and links with renowned Universities worldwide. The student population is around 10 000, with some 55 international students mostly coming from Botswana, Comoro, France, Germany, India, Kenya, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Nigeria, Rwanda, Seychelles, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe. Many international students choose the University of Mauritius to spend a semester abroad. At UoM collaborating with international universities is fundamental to providing excellent teaching and research. UoM has relationships with universities across the globe, from France to Australia, Malaysia to South Africa. These relationships enable UoM undergraduates to study abroad, graduate students to benefit from global peers and mentors, and lecturers to engage with students and colleagues around the world in teaching/advising relationships and collaborative research projects. The Students’ Union was established in 1971. It is run by and for the students. It offers a wide range of activities. All students are members, the membership fee being included in the registration.
