🔵 Following an unexpected early surface, the Redwing glider, deployed in October 2025, by the Teledyne Webb Research Webb Research team, to collect critical ocean data, has been successfully recovered from the middle of the Atlantic Ocean thanks to the rapid mobilization of partners across the globe.
Through OceanOPS (WMO-IOC/UNESCO), the operational centre supporting GOOS Global Ocean Observing System, a unique recovery opportunity was identified when the research vessel Malizia Explorer passed near the glider during its return from Antarctica.
🤝 By joining efforts, the Malizia Explorer crew, OceanOPS, and Teledyne Marine pilots safely retrieved Redwing on 19 May 2026 with only minor damage.
The glider is now en route to Brest for inspection and will soon return to the ocean, continuing its mission to deliver essential data for understanding our changing ocean.
This achievement highlights the strength of international cooperation and the vital role of a connected, responsive ocean observing system.
