Resistance to antibiotics and pesticides is rising at alarming rates. Yet, currently there is no global framework to track the threat to human health and crops.

The STEPS Centre and its partners have published a new guide to T-Labs (Transformation Labs). The 40-page guide draws on lessons from the Pathways Network (https://steps-centre.org/project/pathways-network/), a project investigating new approaches for transformations to sustainability.

Since 2016, the Pathways Network has convened T-Labs to respond to social-ecological problems in six countries (Mexico, Argentina, Kenya, China, the UK and India). T-Labs: A Practical Guide draws from the experiences and lessons from the network to inspire those who are considering similar approaches.

T-Labs are processes that include research, highly facilitated and designed workshops, and meetings – involving diverse stakeholders with an interest in a social-ecological problem, and some capacity to influence how it changes. There is an emphasis on creative and participatory methods, and in exploring questions of agency and power. The aim is to produce innovations and prototypes.

The guide, and lessons from the Pathways Network, will be shared at an event in Nairobi on 10 October 2018 convened by the Africa Sustainability Hub.

How do you think about transformations to sustainability?

A new paper from STEPS sets out a new threefold framework for achieving transformative change under the Sustainable Development Goals. The framework includes three approaches to transformation, which the authors call structural, systemic and enabling approaches.

In the paper, the authors show how these approaches can shed different kinds of light on major sustainability challenges. For real transformation to flourish, the authors argue that open, democratic politics are needed, with central roles not just for policy, but also for mobilisation, critique and political challenge. The authors discuss practical implications for research and appraisal methods, and real-world examples.
