"In 2019, the World Health Organization listed vaccine hesitancy as 1 of the top 10 threats to global health. That year, the US experienced an outbreak of nearly 1300 measles cases, the highest number since 1992. In 2024, measles poses a threat once again. As of March 28, 97 measles cases had been identified in 18 US states this year. “I know that doesn’t seem like a lot, but it was an incredibly hard lift to get to the point of not having measles circulated in the US,” Ratner says. And, as in 2019, most cases are occurring among the unvaccinated."
