In Malaysia, respect may be expressed in different ways—through our greetings, language, food, dress and social customs.

Good etiquette is not expecting everyone to behave exactly like us. It is having the awareness to make others feel acknowledged and respected.

Different customs. Shared respect. That is the beauty of Malaysia. 🇲🇾

Social media has changed the way people interact with one another in ways never thought imaginable.

Not only has it allowed us to communicate and share with people all over the world, but it also comes with its own etiquette that not everyone is familiar with.

Below detail are some of the most essential social media etiquette points that individuals should follow to uphold their online reputation.

Guidelines for personal use
1. Don’t share overly important information.
People turn to social media as a way to share and receive news, ideas, items of interest, and opinions from all over the world.
Generally speaking, when people do share very personal information, it may come across as attention-seeking or an imbalance in their personality.

2. Don’t “wall of text” people
It is best to refrain from posting overly lengthy posts or photos of you at breakfast (which one of our friends is prone to do when she goes on holiday).
Remember, an economy of words and photos is always preferable over too many.

3. Don’t leave messages as seen.
If you don’t feel like talking to someone, be upfront about it and tell them. Although some people may feel uncomfortable doing this, most would agree it’s preferable than being ghosted.
Another response is to send them a plausible reason for not responding, such as feelings a bit unwell, busy with meetings or family, etc.

4. Be polite.
One of the major complaints people have when engaging in social media is people are often rude or offensive.
This effect is magnified when engaging in some form of social media where your face and name are not attached to your account.

5. Don’t overuse hashtags.
While hashtags are useful and allow us to find content relevant to the topic we are looking up, overuse of hashtags is both annoying and makes the offender appear childish.

6. Use spell check.
Poor spelling or grammar, something many people find annoying or unsettling.

Tips of the day.

It's important to know professional email etiquette, and learn how some mistake may be damaging your professional image.

| Know when email is appropriate. |
Is great detail or explanation required? Can tone be easily misconstrued? Is the subject matter time sensitive? If the answer is yes to any of the previous questions, email may not be the appropriate venue.

However, if you are contacting someone who is difficult to reach in person or by phone, asking a simple question, or providing informational items, email is probably most appropriate.

3. Tanamkan azam untuk membalas kebaikan.

Communication in business settings can take three distinct forms.

1.Verbal communication consists of any spoken messages conveyed to others in person or through a technological medium.
2. Written communication consists of any correspondence sent between individuals or groups, including letters and email.
3. In addition to these fundamental forms of communication, body language plays a large role in communicating subtle nuances in the meanings behind your words.
Business people must understand the unwritten cultural rules governing all three types of communication to maximize the effectiveness of their interpersonal skills.

Electronic communication has complicated the rules of business etiquette.

To ensure you're doing your best to follow business etiquette when using electronic communication, consider the following:

✔General telephone etiquette:
✔Consult your organization's rules for telephone use.
✔Answer as quickly as possible.
✔Speak clearly and distinctly, stating your name and the name of your organization.
✔Use a pleasant but professional tone of voice.
✔Transfer calls to the correct personnel.
✔Take messages and deliver them promptly to the correct personnel. Return messages as quickly as possible.
✔When recording an outgoing message, say, "Hello, you've reached (your name) at (name of organization). I am either away from my desk or on the other line. If you'll leave your name, phone number, and a brief message, I'll return your call as soon as possible. Thank you. Goodbye".

Etiquette for online meetings

While different meetings will have different “rules,” there are some basic etiquette practices everyone should follow to create a smooth online meeting experience.

Think of them as the must-do’s of online meeting etiquette:
🔸Introduce everyone during the meeting, and give everyone a chance to contribute
🔸Don’t stare at your phone while other people are presenting
🔸Don’t interrupt other people when they’re speaking (or attempt to speak over them)
🔸Test all technology (including camera/video, Wi-Fi, and screen sharing) before the meeting
🔸Read the agenda, and come prepared
🔸Don’t work on other tasks (like checking email) during the virtual meeting
🔸Turn off all notifications and make sure your cell phone is on silent
🔸Make sure all team members are in a quiet area free from unnecessary distractions
🔸When in doubt, just practice common courtesy. People want to be heard, seen, and respected during an online meeting—just like they do everywhere else.

Motivational Monday

" If you knew the importance of adab ( good manners ), you would pray to Allah for more Adab, instead of more (material) wealth. "
- Ali (RA)

As quoted from Ali Abi Talib RA, Rasulullah said of how important having good manners or etiquette in Islam.

May we follow the good examples of Rasulullah SAW.

Have a wonderful week ahead!
