UTM Centre for Industrial and Applied Mathematics UTM-CIAM is a research Centre of Excellence under the Ibnu Sina Institute for Scientific and Industrial Research (ISI-SIR) at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia

The UTM Centre for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (UTM-CIAM) is a research Centre of Excellence under the Ibnu Sina Institute for Scientific and Industrial Research (ISI-SIR) at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). UTM-CIAM has a strategic alliance with the Oxford Centre for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (OCIAM) since 2012. This cooperation creates impactful contributions, global visibility and networking in the field of industrial and applied mathematics. The Centre facilitates inter-disciplines and industrial collaboration to promote the use of mathematics in tackling issues of real importance and direct industrial relevance. The Centre offers solution for a broad range of industrial applications. Modelling, simulation, optimization of products and processes can enhance technical development, product design, improve efficiency and cut costs of businesses. Activities/Services:-

Main activity:

1. Mathematics in Industry Study Group (MISG) series of international workshops

Mathematics in Industry Study Group (MISG) is held in Malaysia by UTM Centre for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (UTM-CIAM) in collaboration with the world renowned research centre, Oxford Centre for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (OCIAM), University of Oxford. With this world class networking, MISG will bring together national, international researchers and industrialists from a wide range of backgrounds especially with Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) know-how to focus on issues with real importance and direct industrial relevance. Mathematics in Industry Study Group is a five-day problem-solving workshop where applied mathematicians work collaboratively with representatives from industry to achieve the aim of generating new ideas and investigating potential solutions to existing industrial problems that have so far gone unsolved. Mathematics in Industry Study Group is a resource that offers:

• Clarification and formulation of a proposed or existing process
• Methods to solve problems of interest to the industry
• Links with applied mathematicians and scientists from top universities all around the world
• Access to advanced computing solutions and environment
• Highly cost-effective consultation
• Fresh input of new ideas

Yesterday, mathematics moved beyond equations and into conversations about real-world challenges, industry and the future of AI.

The International Seminar on Mathematics in Industry 2026 (ISMI2026) begins today, 2 September 2026, at Pulai Springs Resort, Johor Bahru, bringing together researchers, academic scientists, industry practitioners and other stakeholders across mathematics, statistics and industrial applications.

Organised by UTM Centre for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (UTM-CIAM) and hosted by the Department of Mathematical Sciences, Faculty of Science, UTM, ISMI2026 carries the theme:
“Mathematical Foundations of AI Powering Tomorrow’s Industry.”

The seminar is designed as more than a platform for presenting research. Its stated objectives include sharing experiences in applying mathematical and statistical tools to real industrial settings, fostering academia–industry collaboration, and encouraging mathematical and statistical modelling for sustainability and efficient resource allocation.

As the sessions begin, we look forward to new ideas, meaningful conversations and connections that can develop into future collaborations.
