From Discarded Denim to a Powerful Message for Our Oceans.
Raffles University joined community partners at the Run for Ocean Carnival 2026, organised by JCI Austin Perdana and held at the University of Reading Malaysia on 12 September 2026. As an Arts Supporting Partner, Raffles University participated through its Faculty of Arts & Design – Fashion Design programme, with students and lecturers collaborating with Delay Department on the OPEN WOUND whale installation.
Through hands-on patching, assembling and textile manipulation, our students transformed discarded denim and fabric scraps into the whale's textured outer layer, giving new purpose to materials that would otherwise go to waste. More than an art installation, OPEN WOUND serves as a visual reminder of the impact of marine pollution on ocean ecosystems.
This collaboration brought learning beyond the classroom, allowing students to apply their creative skills to a meaningful environmental initiative. Our appreciation goes to JCI Austin Perdana, University of Reading Malaysia, Delay Department and all participating partners for making this initiative possible.
