A new study, “Restoring Public Trust: A Policy Analysis of Police Misconduct and Governance Frameworks in Penang and Selangor, Malaysia,” examines police misconduct, disciplinary cases and governance challenges.

Dr. Romdhi Fatkhur Rozi from Universitas Jember’s Faculty of Humanities, Indonesia, visited UTAR and the Faculty of Creative Industries (FCI) on 22 September to explore potential areas of collaboration. Building on previous academic engagements with Dr. Kenneth Lee Tze Wui, Deputy Dean (Academic Development and Undergraduate Programmes), FCI, the visit brought together FCI Dean Dr. David C. E. Tneh, the Director of UTAR OIA - Office of International Affairs Dr. Lai Soon-Onn, HoDs Dr. Lim Soo Jin and Dr. Saw Teck Chew, and Mr. Jerry from the Department of Mass Communication.

Dr. David welcomed the opportunity to explore collaboration and strengthen academic links between the two institutions. The exchange centred on shared interests in film, media and creative practice, with discussions on possible avenues for further collaboration between UTAR and Universitas Jember. The visit also included a brief campus tour and a look at a student exhibition, offering Dr. Romdhi a glimpse into FCI's creative learning environment and student work.

The 13th International Conference on Arts and Humanities (ICOAH 2026) has just concluded in Bali, Indonesia, with Dr Kenneth Lee Tze Wui, Deputy Dean (Academic Development and Undergraduate Programmes) of UTAR's Faculty of Creative Industries (FCI), serving as a Theme Lead and Panel Evaluator. FCI also served as an Academic Partner for the conference, coordinated by Dr Kenneth.

The conference provided a valuable platform for meaningful conversations and the exchange of ideas across disciplines. Such exchanges reflect the spirit of Creative Industries, where different perspectives, creative practices and fields of knowledge come together to inspire new ways of thinking.

A small history from Kelantan, now on screen.

FCI is pleased to share that The Ong Chun Procession 2026, directed by Irene Yap, has been selected for the Panorama Kelantan section at Pesta Filem Kota Bharu 2026!

The film emerges from the FRGS-funded project Oral History and the Heritage Continuation of the Peranakan Chinese in the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia, led by Dr. Pue Giok Hun (UKM) and Dr. Loo Hong Chuang (UTAR). By focusing on "small histories"—overlooked cultural practices, memories, and lived experiences—the project provides a deeper, richer understanding of Malaysia's heritage.

This screening also marks the latest collaboration between Irene Yap and Dr. Loo, continuing their shared mission to translate academic research on overlooked Malaysian histories into compelling cinema.
