As an examiner, during a thesis examination, I noticed that the student cited numerous old references. While citing older references is acceptable when discussing original ideas, it becomes problematic when addressing topics with known developments over time. Relying on outdated references, despite the availability of newer developments, gives the impression that you:

1. Lack extensive reading.
2. Cited references indirectly by referencing older papers. For instance, if you read a paper published in 2010 and use its references, those sources will be older than 2010, leading to many outdated citations in your thesis.

During the viva, if an examiner asks for details about specific citations and the student responds, "Oh, I'm sorry, I can't remember the content of that paper," it highlights the issue further.

I continually remind my students that they are responsible for everything written in their thesis. Every word and sentence can prompt questions from the examiner.

If you're interested in learning how to write a thesis that meets examiner expectations, I highly recommend reading this book.

This comprehensive guide provides valuable insights and practical advice on all aspects of thesis writing, from choosing a topic to structuring your work, ensuring thorough research, and properly citing references. Reading this book will help you understand what examiners look for and how to present your research effectively.

This book is a good reading material for a lecturer, postgraduate students and examiners of the postgraduate theses. Since the book was written by the thesis examiner, this book describes step by step how the thesis should be written to fulfil the examiners' expectations. Are you a postgraduate stud...
