UMS, MOSTI Strengthen Nanotechnology Research
Kota Kinabalu, 22 September β Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), through the Nano Materials Research Centre, Faculty of Engineering, in collaboration with the National Nanotechnology Centre, Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), successfully hosted the National Nanotechnology Laboratory Network (RMNK) Seminar 2025at the UMS Gallery Hall.
The opening ceremony was officiated by UMS Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation), Professor Ir. Dr Rosalam Hj. Sarbatly, who emphasised that the seminar serves as a strategic platform to strengthen the nanotechnology research ecosystem in Sabah, while supporting the nationβs technological development agenda.
The seminar featured three main presentation sessions by experts in the field. Associate Professor Ir. Dr. Ahmad Mukifza bin Harun, Director of the National Nanotechnology Centre, MOSTI, spoke on Funding for Hubs and Spokes (MOSTI Program). Meanwhile, Professor Ir. Dr. Rosalam Hj. Sarbatly delivered a presentation on Nanofiber: A Revolutionary Fiber for ASEANβs Fundamental Industries. In addition, Associate Professor Dr. Chee Fuei Pien, Deputy Dean (Research and Innovation), Faculty of Science and Technology, UMS, elaborated on Surface Imaging Using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) as an essential method for understanding material structures at the nanoscale.
In the afternoon session, participants visited the Centre for Instrumentation and Science Services (PIPS) to observe demonstrations of advanced research equipment, including Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM). The visit also showcased the characterization of nanofibers produced using the Electrospinning Machine.
The RMNK 2025 Seminar is expected to be a catalyst in positioning UMS as a hub for nanotechnology research in Sabah. At the same time, it strengthens strategic collaboration between UMS and MOSTI to advance technological innovation at both national and international levels.
