On 22nd April, Rimba Ilmu welcomed second-year IMU Chinese Medicine students for an immersive learning experience. Guided by Dr. Yong, the students were introduced to the garden’s layout, its diverse collection of herbs, and the rich history behind the botanical garden. They then visited the Exhibition Hall, where they learned about Malaysia’s tropical rainforest and its importance to local communities. Their curiosity grew as they explored how plants and life adapt to thrive in such wet and humid conditions.

The journey continued at the Herbarium, where students discovered how plant specimens are carefully preserved and documented for future research, followed by a visit to the conservatory to observe endangered species and plants used in Chinese medicine. Through interactive discussions, they deepened their understanding of plant classification and uses, including edibility and medicinal value. The visit concluded at the Chinese Medicine section of the garden, where students experienced the herbs firsthand. They even got the opportunity of crushing leaves to enjoy their natural aromas. A special highlight of the day was spotting the Asam Gelugor tree in bloom after years without fruit, a promising sign of what’s to come.

Getting our hands dirty while cleaning the conservatory, surrounded by layers of moss and greenery 🌿 It was tough work, but laughter, teamwork, and good vibes kept us going the whole time. Turning hard work into a fun memory made the experience even more meaningful.
One of the biggest challenges was dealing with the slippery moss and stubborn dirt that took extra effort to remove. The heat and constant scrubbing tested our energy, but we didn’t give up. In the end, working together made every challenge feel worth it 💪✨

As MCKC reaches its 10th anniversary, we find ourselves celebrating our journey while also mourning the unexpected loss of one of our founding members, Dr Ruth Kiew.
We will hold a memorial gathering on Saturday, Dec 6 at 8 pm at Rimba Ilmu Universiti Malaya, for members and researchers to honour her memory and share our experiences working with her. All are invited to join us. The hall can accommodate up to 70 people, and seating will be on a first-come, first-served basis.

Hear from our intern - Jade 💃🏻

"My internship at Rimba Ilmu gave me a new perspective on how my skills as a chemical engineering student could be applied outside the lab. I spent most of my time cataloguing specimens, updating records, and preparing herbarium sheets, but I also got to help out with forest tours and merchandise sales.

I appreciated the chance to work more independently, while still getting support and guidance from my supervisors. It was a very hands-on experience that helped me become more detail-oriented and flexible, and it gave me a better understanding of how science and education can work together in conservation."
