UM Languages & Linguistics

UM Languages & Linguistics Communicating Across Borders Faculty of Languages and Linguistics,UM offers courses for its undergraduate Programme, the Bachelor of Languages and Linguistics.

There are currently, nine language specializations for this programme: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, German, Italian. Japanese, Spanish and Tamil. The Faculty also offers three postgraduate programmes: Master of Arts (Linguistics), Master of Arts (English Language Studies) and a PhD by research. We continue to offer Malay language classes to international postgraduate students. The institution

has developed significantly in terms of the provision of resources for teaching, learning and research. The faculty has a multinational teaching team of more than 100 lecturers and language teachers, and we embody the theme of communicating across borders. VISION
To be recognized within Malaysia as the preeminent institution for research and teaching in the field of languages and linguistics;
To be recognized internationally as the natural representative for all matters concerning languages and linguistics within Malaysia and to take part as the national representative in all matters concerning languages and linguistics.

“As UMLinguists transition to the working world, they’ll find that linguistics can be applied in more ways than the classroom lets on.”

Amirul Hakim, our final year English Language and Linguistics student recently participated in UNOCT’s “Building Safer Online Gaming Communities” programme as well as the “Workshop on Youth Participation in and Exposure to Nihilistic Violent Extremism Conductive to Terrorism”, organised by the Australian Government and SEARCCT.

He utilises his linguistic background to identify and triage various threats online that may lead to extremism, contributing to more robust guidelines and countermeasures.

His achievements highlight his hard work and determination and we are proud of to see him thrive.
