“Why does the success of this country and its reform agenda matter to the United States? The United States has a natural affinity for any country that seeks a democratic future, one built on openness, rule of law, protection of human rights, civilian leadership, and behavior that conforms to international law.” – Ambassador Mitchell addressing students at Mawlamyine University on July 16, 2015.
U.S. Ambassador Derek Mitchell is in Mawlamyine to engage with political parties, ethnic groups, religious leaders, and youth on a range of issues. Today he paid a visit to Mawlamyine university where he met with university faculty and officials, donated books to University Rector Dr. Aung Myat Kyaw Sein on behalf of the U.S. Embassy, and gave a speech on U.S.-Myanmar relations to students. In his speech, Ambassador Mitchell spoke about how young people like the students in the audience will be the future leaders of this country and concluded his remarks with a quote from U.S. President Abraham Lincoln: “The best way to predict your future is to create it.”
Tell us what President Lincoln’s quote means to you.
