PAENOL AND WORD STRESS GIVE UM DOUBLE RUNNER UP VICTORY

Ernie Adnan, PhD candidate from the Faculty of Languages and Linguistics and Choy Ker Woon from the Faculty of Medicine each emerged as first runner-up at the National Three-minute Thesis Competition 2018 held at Universiti Teknologi Petronas on 25-27 June 2018.

Presenting her thesis titled "How Do We Produce and Perceive Word Stress In Malaysian English?" Ernie delivered an elegant and eloquent presentation.

Meanwhile, Ms. Choy Ker Woon, thesis titled "A Paeonol A Day Keeps The Heart Healthy All The Way" was noted for her storytelling approach and charming presentation.

Both took home RM1,000.00 in cash prizes.

Another contestant, Andrew Ng Kay Lup, representing the Faculty of Engineering talked about his research on rancid cooking oil.

These feats may not be possible without the many support from UM’s management and staff especially volunteer trainer, Prof. Dr. Sithi V Muniandy from Department of Physics, Faculty of Science.

About 60 contestants from public and private universities competed in the competition where two winners from three categories (Science & Technology, Social Science, and Engineering) will represent Malaysia at the international competition.

This year, UiTM and UPM will represent Malaysia.

The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) is a research communication competition designed for postgraduate students to present their research summary concisely within three minutes to a non-specialist audience.

Within three minutes, participants are required to describe and explain their research aims, findings and significance to the audience.

This competition is open to all active UM PhD candidates who are currently in the 4th semester and above.

Thank you.
