In conjunction with World Autism Awareness & Acceptance Month, the Disability Services Unit (DSU), IIUM and AbdulHamid AbuSulayman Kulliyyah of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences (AHAS KIRKHS) successfully organised the Seminar Kebangsaan Fiqh Autism & Hak OKU Beragama on Thursday, 30 April 2026 at Wadi Budi Building, IIUM Gombak.
This programme was held in collaboration with JAKIM, Jabatan M***i Wilayah Persekutuan, JAWI, YADIM, PANDAI, IIUM PD~CARE, ADVO OKU SEJAHTERA, IIUM IBN UMMI MAKTUM CLUB (I-MaC), and IIUM Student Union (IIUMSU), with a total participation of 250 attendees.
The seminar aimed to raise awareness and deepen public understanding of autism, particularly the experiences and needs of individuals on the autism spectrum across different stages of life. Through discussions surrounding Fiqh Autism and reasonable accommodation, the programme highlighted the importance of empathy, inclusivity, and collective responsibility in creating a more understanding and compassionate society.
The event commenced with an opening speech by Prof. Dato’ Fauzan Nordin, Deputy Dean of IIUM, and was officially launched by YB Senator Marhamah Rosli, Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs).
The programme also featured a keynote address by Prof. Emeritus Dato’ Osman Bakar, Rector of IIUM, entitled “Tawhidic Epistemology, Inclusivity OKU dan Sunnah Rasulullah SAW.”
The seminar included two engaging forum sessions. The first session, “Isu-Isu Fiqh bagi Individu Autism,” was moderated by Prof. Dr. Akmal Khuzairy Abdul Rahman and featured insightful discussions by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hasnah Toran, Dr. Khairul Fahmi Jamaludin, and Dr. Saidatolakma Mohd Yunus.
The second session, “Reasonable Accommodation to Optimize Potential,” moderated by Prof. Dr. Ruzita Mohd Amin, brought together Sr. Khairiyah Abdul Razak, Dr. Sofiah Samsudin, and Br. Nur Arif Jasmin to share their experiences on how reasonable accommodation beyond textbook as practiced in IIUM’s inclusive support system for students with autism has managed to transform Nur Arif Jasmin, a quiet student with moderate autism into currently a Phd student, a well known influencer, public speaker and prolific writer as well as author of the first Fiqh Autism book in the country.
May this initiative continue to inspire greater awareness, acceptance, and meaningful inclusion for the autism community in line with the values of Islam and the Sunnah of Rasulullah SAW. 🌿
