🧑‍🎓 Taaruf Week: Understanding Disability & The Role of the Disability Services Unit (DSU), IIUM

We would like to give a warm welcome to our new students of session 2026/2027. Congratulations for successfully enrolling into our garden of knowledge and virtue where you will embark on your academic journey for the next few years ahead.

We were honoured to present to our new generation of students an introduction to our services. We explored together what disability is, and the functions and accommodations we offer to our students with disabilities.

The objective of this session is to promote better understanding and enhance empathy towards persons with disabilities. It also calls upon all students to care and assist one another especially their friends with disabilities.

Two students with autism were also invited to share their experiences and the challenges faced, and how they overcome those hurdles and thrived with the right accommodations provided by the DSU and the IIUM community.

The forum was moderated by Br. Nur Arif Jasmin, a student with autism and doing his Phd from Dept of Quran and Sunnah, KIRKHS.

The panelists and guests included:

🔵 Br. Tengku Arif Sulaiman, Assistant Secretary, IIUMSU & student volunteer

A few members of the audience also got the chance to experience what it feels like to navigate the mosque as a blind person with the use of blindfolds and white canes. They shared how difficult it was to walk through an unfamiliar space, and empathised with the struggles of the visually impaired.

The session also called for students to register as I-MaC & DSU volunteers and buddies.

We hope that our session is beneficial to all, for both disabled and non-disabled students.

The entrance of women into the workforce during the 1970's has become a benchmark for social equality and systemic change. They were driven by economic necessity, higher education and a change in social norms. In lieu of these new circumstances, employers had to adapt their policies and culture to accommodate for this new demographic.

Similar to accommodation for women in the workforce during the earlier days, the employment of PwDs should also be granted with similar acommodation based on their needs. Employers must now step up to accommodate these disabled workers which not only brings changes into policies, but also the attitudes and cultures of able-bodied employees.

Alhamdulillah. We were given the honour to conduct training on disability equality and inclusive leadership at Wisma PERKESO, Seremban, Negeri Sembilan to these labourers. The full-day training programme involved staff from various companies invited by PERKESO themselves. We aim to enhance empathy and understanding towards PwDs within the workplace through various activities.

The main trainers included:
🎙️ Prof. Dr. Ruzita Mohd Amin, Head for IIUM's DSU
🎙️ Major General Dato' Yusri Anwar, Vice President for AdvoOKU

These panellists shared to us their expertise regarding the topic, allowing workers to truly understand the challenges disabled employees face and why it is important to help them overcome systemic barriers.

The programme also included a sharing session involving:
🎙️ Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nor Azizan Che Embi, lecturer from the Kulliyyah of Economics and Management Sciences (as the moderator)
🎙️ Nur Arif Jasmin, autistic PhD student studying Quran and Sunnah
🎙️ Muhammad Hadi Hussaini Talib, auDHD Master's student from Information and Communications Technology

We hope that our programme inspires both employers and employees to strive for further systemic change against discrimination against PwDs. Everyone must play a role in upholding inclusive policies and work environment.

Congratulations and thank you to Sr. Amira for sharing her story during a talk for Inspirasi Varsiti. It was an honour to have one of our disabled students invited by STADD to speak about the importance of tertiary education.

Around 200 students from various nearby secondary schools had attended this 3-day-2-nights programme. Inspirasi Varsiti aims to promote tertiary education towards future SPM graduates so that they may continue building their future and the future of our nation.

Sr. Amira herself is a student with visual impairment studying sociology and anthropology. Despite being disabled, she shared to us just how important tertiary education is towards one's all-round development, be it academic, professional or social. She talked about the challenges she had faced and how despite everything, education is a must.

🎌 Talk: Employment Policies for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) in Japan.

Alhamdulillah, we were very honored to welcome Prof. Jun Nakagawa from Tokyo's Keizei University to give a presentation of his research on the employment policies relating to persons with disabilities in Japan.

We have benefited from the exchange of views and information relating to the topic, especially in making comparisons between the Japanese and Malaysian experiences. Prof. Jun's research enlightened us on the complex factors that impact employability rates and how they are analyzed. This is especially vital in upholding the rights of PwDs and in holding hiring organisations accountable.

The discussions also explored the possibilities of joint research in this important area with IIUM. Further discussions will follow as the way forward insya’Allah.
