National Interdental Physiology Challenge
This pioneer event, co-organized by the UM Dental Society and the Malaysian Dental Association is a unique competition for dental students. The overarching focus and rationale for a Dental Physiology Quiz is to emphasize a proper perspective of learning Human Physiology and apply its relevance to Dental sciences. Some immediate pertinent illustrations of
Dental -related Physiology include e.g. bleeding and hemostasis. pain and afferent sensory nerve transmission from nociceptors in the oral cavity. mastication, salivation and swallowing in digestive physiology
d. cardio-respiratory physiology in health and also its involvement in oral surgery. immuno-physiology of the mucosal system
f. dentition and calcium homeostasis
g. special senses of hearing, balance, vision, smell, taste
h. body fluid, blood volume, ECF pH and endocrine regulation. systemic pathophysiology and its associated oral presentations. neurophysiology of temperature control. The use of this platform of a Dental Physiology Quiz to formulate questions that highlight principles and concepts in Physiology as applied to dental health and disease will increase the dental student’s appreciation for human physiology. The oral cavity in the head is after all connected to the body! In addition, the Dental Physiology competition aims to encourage lecturers teaching physiology in dental schools to think through appropriate examples to use in their classes in order to better engage dental students. This milestone event in Dental Education launched by University of Malaya students incorporates a stimulating fun event with a specific slant in understanding and learning Physiology from a focused, academic perspective and interest of the dental students.
