From Classroom to Trading Floor: UMS Students Explore Thailand’s Capital Market
BANGKOK, 27 March 2026 – Bridging the gap between theory and real-world practice, students from Universiti Malaysia Sabah Labuan International Campus (UMSLIC) stepped beyond the classroom into the dynamic environment of the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET), gaining firsthand experience of capital market operations. As part of the “Bhat & Beyond: A Finance Student Journey” programme, the visit provided students with an immersive learning experience through interactive exhibits and live trading simulations, transforming financial concepts into practical insights and preparing them for the realities of the global financial industry.
The industry visit was led by Dr. Aminah Shari, Senior Lecturer in Investment at the Labuan Faculty of International Finance, and coordinated by Laiba Ijaz Khan, Programme Director. The delegation comprised 15 students from Year 2 and Year 3 of the Bachelor of International Business (International Finance) programme, reflecting strong engagement in global experiential learning.
The visit featured a guided tour of the Stock Exchange of Thailand Learning Center, which houses the Maruey Library and INVESTORY, an interactive Investment Discovery Museum. These facilities serve as key educational platforms that promote financial literacy and investment awareness among the public, offering a comprehensive overview of Thailand’s capital market development.
During the session, students explored a range of interactive exhibits designed to introduce personal financial planning, investment fundamentals, and the development of Thailand’s capital market. The experience was enhanced through engaging learning tools, including educational animations, interactive games, and immersive displays, providing a dynamic understanding of how financial markets operate.
One of the key highlights of the visit was the stock trading simulation, where participants experienced buying and selling stocks in a simulated Thai market environment. This hands-on activity allowed students to apply theoretical knowledge in a practical setting, strengthening their understanding of trading strategies and market dynamics.
In addition, students were introduced to a recreated historic trading floor, offering valuable insights into the evolution of stock exchanges and the transformation of trading systems from traditional floor trading to modern digital platforms.
The visit also reinforced the importance of technology-driven financial education, aligning with the growing demand for digital competencies in the financial industry. By engaging with interactive tools and simulation-based learning, students were better prepared to navigate the increasingly complex and technology-driven global financial landscape.
Through this visit, delegates gained practical insights into the structure and functions of capital markets, while enhancing their understanding of the role of stock exchanges in supporting economic growth and financial development. The experience provided a meaningful connection between academic learning and real-world financial practices.
This initiative highlights Universiti Malaysia Sabah’s commitment to providing industry-relevant, experiential, and globally oriented education, ensuring that students are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and exposure needed to thrive in the evolving world of finance.
