I am from Bintulu, Sarawak, and graduated from SMK Bandar Bintulu.
After completing secondary school, my examination results were not as strong as I had hoped, and I found myself uncertain about my future direction. I was later introduced to the profession of a Wireman and discovered that it offers a stable career with excellent employment prospects while providing valuable technical skills that can last a lifetime. With my parents' full support, I decided to pursue this career path and began looking for a suitable technical and vocational institution.
After comparing several options, I chose Riam Institute of Technology (RiamTec). Besides its positive learning environment, RiamTec was established by Riam Road Secondary School, giving the campus a strong Chinese cultural atmosphere that made me feel immediately at home. I also felt reassured that I would have no difficulty adapting to the language and culture. In addition, the Institute offers affordable tuition fees, which was another important factor in my decision. More importantly, the Electrical Installation & Maintenance (EIM) programme not only provides comprehensive technical training but also prepares graduates to obtain the Wireman G2 and Wireman G1 certifications, giving students a solid foundation for future employment and career advancement. This further strengthened my confidence in choosing the programme.
I have now been studying at RiamTec for more than a year and will be undertaking my On-the-Job Training (OJT) with an IT and systems integration engineering company in Bintulu between February and March next year. This is the same company where I previously completed my SKM Level 2 OJT, and I am looking forward to returning to further develop my practical skills. During my previous training, I gained first-hand insight into the industry's strong demand for qualified wiremen. Skilled professionals remain in short supply, and this has given me even greater confidence in the career opportunities available after graduation.
My experience at RiamTec has been extremely positive. The lecturers are dedicated, approachable and always willing to provide guidance whenever I encounter difficulties, ensuring that I fully understand both the theory and practical skills being taught. The Institute also provides well-equipped training facilities, allowing students to gain extensive hands-on experience and develop the professional competencies required by the industry. After graduation, I hope to begin my career in the electrical industry, continue building practical experience, and further develop my professional expertise as I work towards achieving my long-term career goals.
