Community Empowerment through Smart Collaboration

A meeting was recently held between the School of Mechanical Engineering, Universiti Sains Malaysia and the Kedah State Government to discuss opportunities for collaboration aimed at strengthening community development and empowering SMEs in the state. Representing the School of Mechanical Engineering, Ir. Dr. Abdul Haadi Abdul Manap shared insights on the application of IR 4.0 and Advanced Thermodynamics technologies in modernizing traditional industries, particularly in improving mid-stream production efficiency.

Among the areas discussed were the use of smart technologies and precision farming methods to support Kedah coffee production, as well as the integration of IoT-enabled systems and automation in the fisheries sector to enhance processing capabilities and product quality. Representatives from Invest Kedah Berhad and Kulim Technology Park Corporation also participated in the discussion, reflecting ongoing collaboration between academia, industry, and the state in exploring innovation-driven economic development.

Industrial Visit to Sultan Azlan Shah Power Station

On 6 May 2026, final-year students from the Energy Conversion Systems course had the opportunity to visit the Sultan Azlan Shah Power Station, Manjung as part of their industrial exposure.

The visit was led by course lecturers, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Khaled Al-attab and Dr. Khairil Faizi Mustafa. During the session, students were given a rare hands-on experience using the power plant control simulator, which helped them better understand the operation and control of a modern thermal power plant.

The School of Mechanical Engineering, USM would like to express its sincere appreciation to TNB-GENCG, a subsidiary of Tenaga Nasional Berhad, for kindly accepting our request to conduct the industrial visit. This opportunity allowed the students to explore Malaysia’s largest thermal power plant, with a total generation capacity of 4,100MW and advanced supercritical steam technology—the first of its kind in Southeast Asia.

A valuable hands-on experience that connects classroom theory with real-world industrial practice.

Title: Enhancing the Performance of the Additive Manufactured Spur Gears Through a DMAIC - Driven Optimization Framework

Additive manufacturing (AM) continues to redefine modern production by enabling greater design flexibility and cost efficiency, particularly in the fabrication of precision components such as spur gears. This study makes a significant contribution by addressing one of the most pressing challenges in AM—ensuring consistent quality and dimensional accuracy. Through a structured Lean Six Sigma (LSS) approach, the research successfully integrates three DMAIC frameworks to improve process efficiency, capability, and parameter optimisation. The outcomes are highly impactful: a 70–80% reduction in printing time, an 89.13% decrease in process variability, and a 25.56% improvement in process capability (Cpk). By identifying printing speed as the most critical factor influencing dimensional accuracy and validating optimisation through advanced statistical methods such as Taguchi and Response Surface Methodology, the study offers a practical, replicable pathway for enhancing manufacturing precision. These findings not only advance engineering practices but also strengthen the reliability of AM for critical industrial applications.

Congratulations to Hashim Riyadh Makki Hashim on this remarkable achievement. May this success mark the beginning of a distinguished and impactful career, and may he continue to contribute meaningfully to the advancement of engineering, sustainability, and innovation in the years ahead.
