[ FAST FACT : TYPES OF VOLUNTEERING; ANIMAL VOLUNTEERING]
WHAT IS ANIMAL VOLUNTEERING?
Lending a hand at the local animal shelter may be the first thing that cones to mind when thinking about volunteering animals, but there are tons of different settings and roles beyond the shelter for prospective volunteers to explore. Wild and domestic animals alike need help from human volunteers and even those who want to help animals without handling them directly can find their niche.
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ بَيْنَا رَجُلٌ يَمْشِي فَاشْتَدَّ عَلَيْهِ الْعَطَشُ فَنَزَلَ بِئْرًا فَشَرِبَ مِنْهَا ثُمَّ خَرَجَ فَإِذَا هُوَ بِكَلْبٍ يَلْهَثُ يَأْكُلُ الثَّرَى مِنْ الْعَطَشِ فَقَالَ لَقَدْ بَلَغَ هَذَا مِثْلُ الَّذِي بَلَغَ بِي فَمَلَأَ خُفَّهُ ثُمَّ أَمْسَكَهُ بِفِيهِ ثُمَّ رَقِيَ فَسَقَى الْكَلْبَ فَشَكَرَ اللَّهُ لَهُ فَغَفَرَ لَهُ قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَإِنَّ لَنَا فِي الْبَهَائِمِ أَجْرًا قَالَ فِي كُلِّ كَبِدٍ رَطْبَةٍ أَجْرٌ
“From Abu Hurairah Radiallahu ‘anhu, Rasulullah SAW said,
There was a man who was walking and he felt very thirsty. He then went down to a well and drank from the well.
After that, he came out from the well and found a dog sticking its tongue out licking the moist soil because of thirst.
The man said : This dog is thirsty as i felt earlier.
So he filled his shoe with water, held it in his mouth and then he went up and gave the dog a drink.
So the God thank him and forgave him.
The companions asked: O Messenger of Allah, will we be rewarded by doing good to animals?
Rasulullah SAW replied : Doing good to every living creature will be rewarded.”
Narrated by Al-Bukhari (no.2363, 2466 & 6009) and Muslim (no.2244).
7 BENEFIT OF ANIMAL VOLUNTEERING :
1) Be therapeutic
being physically around animals can improve our immunity functions, decrease heart rate, and blood pressure. Similarly, it can help in decreasing loneliness and anxiety and increase happiness also emotional well-being.
2) Improve your level of patience
animal volunteering will allow to learn how to cater to each being depending on their distinctive personality. You may have to use different words or gestures to provide support and training for the animals.This will allow you to grow patience, which will be useful not only with animals but people around you as well
3) Great companions
Animals are loving and they are capable of creating emotional bonds and long-lasting friendships. With an animal around you will never be anything short of entertained. You will also discover a little companion who will always be by your side
4) Feeling of fulfillment
While choosing where you want to volunteer you must consider the type of interaction you will have with the animals. This post mainly addresses interactions one would have with animals in a shelter or sanctuary. These animals are rescued and treated to be adopted by loving people or to live out their years within the sanctuary.
5) Helping an animal in need
To protect these animals they are kept in shelters with many others, resulting in them being deprived of the individual affection they would receive in a loving home. Volunteering can help such animals receive the attention they need and help them feel happier and loved.
6) Reconnect with nature and the environment
being around animals may help you feel more at peace with the ongoing situation. For example, many people have started giving opportunities like horse-riding for special needs kids and adults which can allow you to feel at par with nature.
7) Develop future career skills
Volunteering can give you the opportunity to develop hands-on skills and gain real life experience with animals. It provides an insight on the administrative tasks that are occurring behind the scenes of an animal rescue centre or sanctuary. It also may aid you in determining if this is the field you would like the direction of your career heading towards
