RAFIQ 2026 | Postgraduate Seminar on Islamic Science brings together our postgraduate students in a supportive space for presenting research, exchanging ideas and strengthening scholarly inquiry in Islamic Science.

The seminar featured Dr. Wan Mohd Fazrul Azdi Wan Razali, Associate Fellow of ISI, who revisited Imam al-Ghazali’s Al-Munqidh min al-Dalal and explored al-Ghazali’s thought as an important foundation for the integration of Naqli and Aqli knowledge in research.

Day 4 | MUKIM ILMU 2026

Our final day brought us to the wider forces shaping the future of the Ummah. Mr. Hilman Fikri Azman, in Navigating Geopolitics, guided participants through the changing global landscape and the need to understand how power, interests and competing narratives shape our world. Prof. Dr. Ahmad Murad Merican, in Digital Hegemony & Its Biases, challenged us to recognise Eurocentrism in knowledge production and the importance of reconstructing knowledge, shifting the centre and recovering perspectives rooted in our own intellectual traditions.

Day 3 brought MUKIM ILMU into deeper conversations on knowledge, decolonisation and leadership. We had the privilege of learning from Prof. Dr. Syed Farid Alatas, who led the session on Decolonising Ourselves, challenging us to examine coloniality not only in institutions, but in the way knowledge is produced, received and legitimised. His work has long engaged with the critique of colonial and Eurocentric knowledge and the recovery of alternative intellectual traditions. The conversation continued with Mr. Yusmadi Yusoff on Reclaiming Leadership, bringing his experience across law, public service and governance into a reflection on leadership and the responsibilities that come with it.
We ended the evening with The Great Nation simulation, where participants had to defend priorities, in the face of national crises.

MUKIM ILMU 2026 — Day 2

Day 2 began with Conflict Resolution delivered by Dr Fadhlina Alias, drawing particularly from Taha Jabir al-Alwani’s “The Ethics of Disagreement in Islam”. This was followed by Postgraduate Thesis Conversations, bringing research into the space as a source of shared learning. Another interesting sharing was by Mr. Abu Daniel (CICW) on the developments in Artificial Intelligence followed by “Dissecting Modern Ideologies” delivered by Mr. Muhammad Firdaus Zalani, examining modern ideological frameworks and the assumptions and worldviews underlying them. The night concluded with YAQĪN: A Toolkit for Thought Experiments moving from claims and assumptions towards clarity, consequences and, ultimately, the test of justice.

ISI is organizing its upcoming Academic Training on Islamic Science Research (ATHAR) as part of its continuing effort to encourage and strengthen research in Islamic Science.

ATHAR aims to provide a space for researchers to explore research approaches grounded in the Islamic worldview, strengthen the integration of Naqli and Aqli knowledge, and develop research that is relevant to contemporary realities and contributes meaningfully to society.

Our sincere appreciation to our ISI Associate Fellows for spearheading this initiative.

[Merdeka is more than a celebration. It is about giving meaning to independence through gratitude, responsibility, and service to the nation. Salam Merdeka]
