NEW FACES, BIG SMILES, FRESH BEGINNINGS!

SOTA USM welcomed our amazing freshies for Academic Session 2026/2027 at Pese’ban Agung, USM, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter!

The day was filled with smiles, laughter and new connections as our freshies met the Dean of SOTA USM, Academic Advisors, lecturers, administrative staff and technical staff who will be part of their journey throughout their time at SOTA.

They also got to know more about USM Library Services and received an Induction to Health & Safety, giving them a great start as they stepped into their new creative learning environment. 📚✨

Then came the fun part!

Our freshies headed to their respective departments, met their lecturers and took part in fun ice-breaking activities, turning unfamiliar faces into new friends and first-day nerves into plenty of laughter! 🫶😆

From the first hello to the first laugh, it was a day full of energy, excitement and joy.

Welcome to the SOTA family, freshies! ❤️

SOTA USM Awarded RM500,000 IDTM Grant for AI & Digital Content Innovation

Hearty congratulations to Dr. Norfarizah Mohd Bakhir, Deputy Dean (Research, Innovation & Community-Industry Linkages) at the School of the Arts (SOTA), Universiti Sains Malaysia!

Through her visionary leadership, SOTA USM has been awarded the Industry Driven Technology Module (IDTM) Grant worth RM500,000 from NCER Malaysia under the NTIC programme.

Her project, "Visual Communication Design and Generative AI for Digital Content Creation," is a testament to her dedication to pushing the boundaries of creative arts and technology. This achievement, made possible in collaboration with GoClick International Sdn. Bhd. (represented by Affif Jafre), reflects her commitment to bridging academia and industry.

BENGKEL BONEKA BAYANG: KEMBARA PLANET DI BIMA SAKTI

Bengkel Boneka Bayang: Kembara Planet di Bima Sakti telah berlangsung pada 19 hingga 20 September 2026 bertempat di Muzium & Galeri Tuanku Fauziah (MGTF), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM).

Program selama dua hari ini menghimpunkan seramai 35 peserta yang terdiri daripada ibu bapa, penjaga dan kanak-kanak dalam pengalaman pembelajaran kreatif yang menggabungkan elemen seni, imaginasi, penceritaan dan penggunaan bahan kitar semula.

Sepanjang bengkel, para peserta berpeluang meneroka dunia imaginasi melalui penghasilan planet, watak pengembara, makhluk asing serta pelbagai elemen kreatif. Hasil ciptaan kemudiannya dikembangkan menjadi sebuah cerita keluarga dan dipersembahkan menerusi seni boneka bayang.

Bengkel ini turut dibimbing oleh Dr. Chong, Presiden Persatuan Astronomi Pulau Pinang, yang berkongsi pengetahuan berkaitan astronomi serta memperkenalkan elemen sains angkasa bagi memperkayakan pengalaman pembelajaran dan kreativiti para peserta.

Program ini merupakan anjuran bersama Pusat Pengajian Seni, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) dan Muzium & Galeri Tuanku Fauziah (MGTF), USM, dengan sokongan Dana Kreatif Perak@PORT.

Melalui pendekatan seni dan pembelajaran berasaskan pengalaman, program ini menyediakan ruang kepada kanak-kanak dan ahli keluarga untuk berkarya, berimaginasi serta berinteraksi secara kreatif, di samping menggalakkan pembelajaran bersama dalam suasana yang menyeronokkan dan bermakna.

A huge congratulations to six Product Design students from the School of the Arts, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) for being selected among the Top 6 Projects in the James Dyson Award 2026! 🎉

Reflecting on an Evening of Pure Magic and Cultural Majesty 🇲🇾

On September 17, 2026, I had the privilege of witnessing Angin Main Teri at ASWARA’s Black Box, and it was truly an unforgettable experience.

The performance took me on a journey through Malaysia’s rich cultural heritage, particularly the healing rituals of the East Coast. It brought back childhood memories of witnessing a real Main Teri ritual at around seven years old.

The seamless storytelling, meaningful subtitles, fluid transitions, and outstanding performances kept me captivated throughout. The collaboration between cultural practitioners, academia, industry professionals and talented youth beautifully demonstrated how our heritage can continue to live, evolve and inspire new generations.

The breathtaking Mak Yong performance was the perfect conclusion to a powerful evening.

Thank you to everyone involved in bringing this remarkable production to life. May these efforts continue to grow and reach audiences around the world.

In the spirit of Hari Malaysia, let us celebrate and preserve the richness of our diverse heritage.
