Antarctica Day 2025 | Mangrove Action Warriors at Sungai Acheh, Nibong Tebal
In conjunction with Antarctica Day 2025, polar@usm is pleased to highlight a meaningful environmental initiative that connects polar awareness with local climate action. Antarctica stands as the world’s climate sentinel, and this programme reflects the same values of peace, stewardship, and scientific collaboration that Antarctica Day represents.
On 2 November 2025, students from IEA202 Environmental Bioindicator, School of Industrial Technology, USM, conducted the Mangrove Action Warriors programme at Sungai Acheh, Nibong Tebal, with support from polar@usm and various partners. The initiative reinforces the idea that protecting Antarctica begins with responsible actions at home, especially in ecosystems facing high anthropogenic pressure.
Programme Achievements
Across 2075 m² of mangrove landscape, participants planted. 200 Rhizophora apiculata saplings. This species has the potential to store 2,460 kg of CO₂ annually, contributing to nature-based carbon sequestration.
These outcomes support global climate mitigation efforts and reflect the values of Antarctica Day through science, action, and community involvement.
Acknowledging All Sponsors, Partners, and Supporters,
polar@usm expresses appreciation to all organisations that made this initiative possible.

5. SDG 14 Life Below Water
6. SDG 15 Life on Land
These SDGs highlight the interconnectedness between Antarctic conservation principles and local environmental responsibilities.
Why This Matters to Antarctica Day
Antarctica influences global sea levels, ocean circulation, and climate stability. By involving Malaysian youth in hands-on restoration work, polar@usm helps cultivate a deeper understanding of the relationship between polar change and local environmental health.
This programme illustrates how actions in Malaysia can complement global efforts to safeguard the planet. polar@usm remains committed to advancing polar knowledge, environmental stewardship, and sustainability for the benefit of Malaysia and the international community.
