INVITATION TO PARTICIPATE IN INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP SERIES 1
Photonics and Semiconductor Devices, Systems and Applications
Greetings from the School of Physics, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM).
We are pleased to invite researchers, academics, engineers, technical personnel, students, and professionals to participate in the International Workshop Series 1: Photonics and Semiconductor Devices, Systems and Applications.
This workshop series is designed to promote knowledge exchange and technical capacity development across emerging nations, providing participants with opportunities to enhance their technical knowledge and gain valuable insights into current developments and practical applications in photonics, optical sensing, nanomaterials, optical fibre technology, electrical characterisation, and 3D design.
WORKSHOP SCHEDULE
Workshop 1 – 8 October 2026 | 6.00 PM – 8.00 PM
Fiber Optic Communication and Distributed Optical Fiber Sensor
Trainer: Dr. Abdul Hadi Sulaiman
This workshop introduces the fundamentals of fibre optic communication and sensing, including multiwavelength fibre lasers, Rayleigh and Brillouin scattering, distributed acoustic sensing, and Brillouin Optical Time Domain Analysis.
Workshop 2 – 16 October 2026 | 6.00 PM – 8.00 PM
The Principles and Dynamic Application of OPTICAL Devices and Sensing
Trainer: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ahmad Fairuz Omar
Participants will explore the fundamentals of optics and photonics devices used in optical sensing systems, including optical spectroscopy, spectrometer instrumentation, data analysis, and applications in environmental monitoring, food quality assessment, and medical diagnosis.
Workshop 3 – 22 October 2026 | 6.00 PM – 8.00 PM
Mastering Optical Fiber Technology: Fundamentals, Testing, and Advanced Applications
Trainer: Dr. Afiq Arif Aminuddin Jafry
This workshop covers the fundamentals and applications of optical fibre technology, optical communication systems, WDM networks, fibre testing techniques, OTDR operation, optical link budget analysis, sensing, pulsed laser technology, and silicon photonics.
Workshop 4 – 29 October 2026 | 6.00 PM – 8.00 PM
The Elegance of Metal Nanoparticles: Why Does Size Matter?
Trainer: Dr. Nur Nabihah Yusof
Participants will gain an understanding of metal nanoparticles, surface plasmon resonance, localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), nanoparticle synthesis and UV-Vis characterisation, as well as applications in biosensing, medicine, energy, and photonics.
Workshop 5 – 5 November 2026 | 6.00 PM – 8.00 PM
Frequency-Dependent Electrical Properties of Nanomaterials
Trainer: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Iskandar Shahrim Mustafa
This workshop introduces the electrical behaviour of nanoparticle-based materials and covers resistance, capacitance, impedance, phase angle, frequency-dependent polarisation, dielectric behaviour, LCR meter operation, data acquisition, and interpretation of electrical properties.
Workshop 6 – 12 November 2026 | 6.00 PM – 8.00 PM
3D Design with TinkerCAD and FreeCAD
Trainer: Dr. Beh Khi Poay
Participants will be introduced to practical entry-level CAD skills using two free platforms, TinkerCAD and FreeCAD, including 3D modelling, parametric design, and preparation of STL files suitable for 3D printing.

The workshop series is suitable for undergraduate and postgraduate students, lecturers, researchers, engineers, technical staff, educators, laboratory personnel, and professionals from relevant fields, including Physics, Materials Science, Nanotechnology, Electronics, Engineering, and related disciplines.
