🌿📘 Shaping Penang’s Schools Through Education for Sustainable Development (2025)

This book was written through the kind collaboration of many dedicated teachers, students, and schools in Penang who shared their experiences and ideas on making education more sustainable. It was made possible with the support of the Malaysian National Commission for UNESCO (MNCU) through the SKUM Contribution Grant (GSS), and guided by the collective efforts of RCE Penang, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), and our school partners across the state.

The book brings together stories of schools that have taken simple but meaningful steps toward sustainability, from creating green spaces and managing waste, to promoting biodiversity and student-led innovation. Each story reflects the commitment and care of the people who make learning come alive by respecting the environment.

May this small effort serve as a gentle reminder that education and sustainability grow best when we work together, with humility, patience, and shared purpose. 🌱💚

On 7th August 2025, RCE Penang had the pleasure of hosting Kim and Sherridan from RCE Tasmania. The meeting provided a valuable opportunity to reconnect and exchange insights on ongoing Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) initiatives. We shared updates on our current projects focused on integrating ESD into formal and non-formal education across Penang, including youth engagement, community-based learning, and campus sustainability efforts.

The discussion also explored potential areas for future collaboration between RCE Penang and RCE Tasmania, with a focus on joint research, knowledge sharing, and cross-regional ESD programmes. Both teams expressed enthusiasm for strengthening ties and co-developing impactful activities that align with the global RCE network’s mission. The visit was a meaningful step toward fostering deeper regional collaboration in support of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
