Founded in 1821 as the world’s first mechanics institute, Heriot-Watt has a rich heritage and an established reputation as a leading research-led university. Heriot-Watt University Malaysia’s purpose-built campus opened to students in Putrajaya in September 2014 and the formal launch took place on 12 February 2015. The £35m campus sits on 4.8 acres in a stunning lakeside location providing exceptional educational facilities in an excellent environment, close to the Putrajaya marina and its modern leisure and sports facilities. This is a fantastic green area, part of Putrajaya Lake’s ‘green continuum’, and the building design is a conscious reference. The ‘green campus’ is remarkable for having the first living grass roof of its kind in Malaysia. At 300 metres long and 30 metres wide, it is the most recognisable sustainable feature of the campus. The roof shades the naturally ventilated spaces below, reduces thermal transmittance, and acts as an observation deck, accessible by glass lift. Other environmentally friendly, passive design features include campus lighting ‘powered’ by the maximum use of natural daylight, a rainwater harvesting system and optimised air-conditioning and thermal control systems. The campus is a state-of-the-art teaching and learning environment, reflecting our status as a leading provider of high-quality, professionally orientated education, knowledge transfer and research. Architect-designed in conjunction with educational design specialists, the campus has been developed with the current generation of students in mind, to create a dynamic, exciting place, which maximises the potential of its setting for study and student life. Let’s hear from Hani about her internship experience at FedEx Kuala Lumpur.

“Joining FedEx for my internship turned out to be an unexpected opportunity that shaped my personal and professional growth in ways I did not anticipate. For me, this journey became about more than building a résumé. It was about finding purpose, aligning my values with my vision of success, and discovering what truly motivates me for the future.

As the first intern in the IGNITE Internship Programme, I stepped into Human Resources and People Operations, supporting employee data management, behavioural initiatives and team-building projects. This gave me the opportunity to bring fresh perspectives into the corporate world while learning directly from experienced professionals.

One of the highlights was helping to deliver the IGNITE orientation programme alongside my mentor, Jin Ju Oon, who led the initiative regionally across Asia Pacific. From preparing welcome kits and creating interactive Mentimeter games to attending career fairs and gathering feedback, every detail showed me the impact of thoughtful planning. The experience pushed me out of my comfort zone, encouraged me to speak up and helped me grow. It reaffirmed my passion for people management and strengthened my dream of one day leading a team with empathy and purpose.”

What does process safety look like beyond the classroom, and why can even a small mistake have serious consequences in an industrial plant?

Organised by the IChemE Student Chapter, the industry talk “Process Safety Application: Contrasting Process Safety in Class with Its Application in the O&G Industry” gave students valuable insights into process safety in the oil and gas industry, led by Mr Alvin Ho Jian Herng, Lead Engineer, Process Safety at Hibiscus Petroleum Berhad. Through real-world examples, Mr Alvin explored the differences between occupational and process safety, the importance of following safety procedures, and how minor oversights can escalate into major incidents affecting equipment, industrial plants and, most importantly, people's lives.

Students also gained insights into how engineers identify and solve process safety problems, alongside advice on developing a strong safety mindset and understanding their responsibilities in the engineering industry. The session concluded with a Q&A, allowing students to ask questions and learn more about process safety in practice.

Let’s hear from Yi Chaw about his internship experience at Northcroft Lim Perunding Sdn Bhd.

“During my internship at Northcroft, a Quantity Surveying consultancy, I took my first real step from the classroom into the professional world. As a second-year Quantity Surveying student, I gained exposure to different areas of the profession, including using software for measurement and remeasurement work, as well as going on site visits to understand how the work I carried out in the office connects to actual projects.

This experience taught me that transitioning from the classroom to the workplace is not about knowing everything, but about being willing to learn, ask questions and grow every day. It has shaped me both personally and professionally, giving me a more realistic understanding of Quantity Surveying and a stronger foundation for my future studies and career.

I would like to thank my lecturers for encouraging us to take up this internship opportunity. I am also grateful to the company for welcoming me into the team, and to my supervisor, seniors and colleagues for their patience, guidance and support throughout my internship.”

Our recent PhD graduate, Dr Goh Kai Le, presented his thesis titled “Enhancing Univariate Control Charts for Gamma Processes”. His work highlights how control charts developed for gamma processes enables early and practical approach to detecting and monitoring unusual changes allowing timely intervention, improving process reliability and reducing the risk of unexpected failures.

Moving away from home to study at Heriot-Watt University in Malaysia took Kevin into unfamiliar territory. What began as a new environment soon became a second home, where he ultimately chose to build his career.

His journey also took him to Edinburgh, the University’s home campus, and to Lagos, Nigeria, representing Indonesia through his continued involvement with the Duke of Edinburgh Award. For Fu Ling, her time at Heriot-Watt University Malaysia gave her more than an academic foundation. Through practical projects, leadership experiences and working with people from different backgrounds, she developed the confidence and skills to step into a global working environment — all while sharing her passion for dance along the way.

Naqeeb studied Civil Engineering. Today, he builds businesses🏗️📈

His journey from engineering to business development wasn’t a sudden change of direction. It happened gradually, as he discovered that alongside developing solutions, he enjoyed working with people, building ideas and bringing different stakeholders together.

Practising HR was never on Chloe’s radar when thinking about career pathways. But her Psychology with Management degree gave her a unique perspective, combining her curiosity about people and human behaviour with business and management.

From Actuarial Science student to Actuarial Analyst in Cambridge 📊

Crystal’s journey grew through experiences beyond the classroom, leading the Society of Actuarial Science and gaining industry experience with EY and KPMG, to pursuing her MSc in Edinburgh. She turned every opportunity into experience that prepared her for the world of work. Today, she begins her career as an Actuarial Analyst at Willis Towers Watson in Cambridge.
