We’re excited to launch a new series celebrating impactful words that reflect the values we uphold at the School of Politics and International Relations.
This week’s quote:
"Regardless of what barriers confront you it is in your power to free yourselves; you have only to want to."
– Olympe de Gouges
Who was Olympe de Gouges?
A revolutionary writer and activist during the French Revolution, de Gouges was an early advocate for women’s rights and equality. She is best known for her "Declaration of the Rights of Woman and the Female Citizen" (1791), a powerful response to the lack of representation in the original Declaration of the Rights of Man.
Selected by Dr. Barton, this quote resonates deeply with our mission to inspire justice, equality, and the courage to advocate for change. Olympe de Gouges, a revolutionary whose contributions deserve greater recognition, reminds us of the power of overlooked voices in shaping history.
