“When you have the state imposing certain values or providing censorship onto creative media products, it puts people off. No matter how much you want to produce, if those restrictions are there, you're not going to go very far,” said Professor Zaharom Nain, a professor of media and communication studies at the Faculty of Arts at the University of Nottingham Malaysia.

On 23 February 2024, a Haiku Workshop funded by Toshiba International Foundation (TIFO) was conducted by Dr Leong Yut Moy on the University of Nottingham Malaysia campus as part of the efforts to promote international understanding of Japan and Japanese literature.

Haiku lovers from the School of Media, Languages and Cultures (SMLC); Computer Science; Politics, History and International Relations (PHIR); Psychology and the School of English were very attentive, engaged and interacted well by answering questions about the topics presented. Students also learned the form, underlying principles, common themes and writing techniques of Haiku; and composed their own masterpieces in English/Japanese. Well done, everyone!

Please stay tuned for our upcoming Workshop on Dazai Osamu on 15 March 2024!

One of the cultural classes we do at SMLC Language Centre - Today we learned how to make the very Korean side dish - Kimchi (김치) and one of the Korean comfort food - Kimbap (김밥).

Special thanks to Ms Jung HyeJin who prepared whole lot ingredients (some key ingredient flown from her hometown Korea!), and passionately coached students how to mix, roll, and all!

Yes, when it comes down to Kimchi and Kimbap, we are serious about it.
