Hiroyuki Sanada (真田 広之, 12 October 1960) is a Japanese actor and martial artist. He is best known to international audiences for his roles as Genbu in Ninja in the Dragon's Den, Ryuji Takayama in Ring, Tasogare Seibei in The Twilight Samurai, Ujio in The Last Samurai, Kenji in Rush Hour 3, and Scorpion in Mortal Kombat. He made his first major Hollywood appearance in The Last Samurai, later appearing in such films as Speed Racer, The Wolverine, 47 Ronin, Life, Avengers: Endgame and Army of the Dead.
Born in Tokyo, Japan, originally planning to be an action movie star, he studied Shorinji Kempo and later took up Kyokushin kaikan karate. He began training at the age of 11 with Chiba's Japan Action Club, where he developed good all-around martial arts ability and soon became Chiba's protégé. After entering high school, following Chiba's advice, he decided to devote himself to his studies and withdrew from performing arts activities. In 1978, he resumed his performing arts activities in earnest after passing the audition for the movie Shogun's Samurai.
Since then, He has enlightened audiences around the world with his talent, skills to act, and versatility in such internationally acclaimed motion pictures as The Last Samurai, co-starring Tom Cruise, and Yoji Yamada's 2004 Oscar-nominated film, The Twilight Samurai. Sanada has also filmed a role in the science fiction adventure film Sunshine, directed by Danny Boyle. Even in the movie The Rush Hour 3, he played the character of a lead villain opposite Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker. He began starring in bigger movies, including the influential Japanese horror film "Ring". He starred in the X-Men franchise, The Wolverine (2013) and more recently, in The Railway Man (2014), and in the movie Mr. Holmes as Tamiki Umezaki. Sanada also reunited with James Ivory in 2007 for the movie City Of Your Final Destiny in which he stars opposite. Perhaps his most prominent role is Hanzo Hasashi aka Scorpion in the new Mortal Kombat.
