CAMS Marine Scientist Summer Camp Inspires High School Students at Xiamen University Malaysia

The CAMS Marine Scientist Summer Camp was successfully held in two sessions, from 21–23 November 2025 and 12–14 December 2025, at Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM). Designed for high school students, the programme aimed to introduce participants to marine science, enhance their understanding of marine-related disciplines, and foster early interest in environmental studies.
Organised by the China-ASEAN College of Marine Sciences (CAMS), the three-day, two-night camp offered an engaging learning experience through introductory lectures, coastal field activities, and hands-on laboratory sessions. The programme focused on raising awareness and providing scientific exposure, allowing students to explore marine science in an accessible, interactive, and inspiring environment.

Participants attended introductory lectures delivered by CAMS academics, introducing them to marine science, biotechnology, and their applications, while highlighting the importance of marine research in environmental protection, sustainability, and innovation. The lectures also provided insights into academic and career pathways in marine and environmental sciences.
A key highlight of the camp was the coastal field sampling activity at Morib Beach, Banting. Under the guidance of instructors, students engaged in fieldwork activities, including water quality testing, plankton sampling, and coastal biodiversity observation. This outdoor component allowed students to connect scientific concepts to real marine environments, making learning more engaging.

Following the field trip, students participated in laboratory sessions at Xiamen University Malaysia, where they conducted water chemistry analysis such as ammonia testing and microscopy-based plankton identification. Through experiments, group discussions, and debriefing, students developed scientific skills and gained confidence in laboratory work.

Students also took part in group discussions, sharing ideas and experiences from the past few days. They had the chance to engage in in-depth conversations with lecturers and students from CAMS, gaining insights into the college and its future development.

The CAMS Marine Scientist Summer Camp reflects CAMS commitment to science outreach and early exposure education, inspiring high school students to develop an interest in marine science and sustainability. Through both sessions, the programme successfully provided exposure to marine science, fostering curiosity, environmental awareness, and enthusiasm for future scientific learning. CAMS looks forward to continuing similar outreach initiatives to nurture the next generation of marine scientists and responsible global citizens.

On 28 November, Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM) held a donation ceremony for the “China–ASEAN College of Marine Sciences (CAMS) Education Development Fund” during the Global Chinese Marine Science Symposium. Attendees included Academician Minhan Dai, XMU alumnus (Class of 1983, Oceanography), Deputy Chair of the XMU University Council, Dean of the Division of Earth Science and Technology, Honorary Director of the State Key Laboratory of Marine Biogeochemistry and Chair of the CAMS International Advisory Committee. Also present were Mr. Gao Xiangming, who attended on behalf of his father Mr. Gao Long, an XMU alumnus (Class of 1980, Chemistry) and major donor to the fund, as well as Prof. Wang Ruifang, President of XMUM, and Prof. Liu Zhiyu, Dean of the College of Ocean and Earth Sciences and Dean of CAMS. The ceremony was hosted by Prof. Liu Zhiyu.

The CAMS Education Development Fund was initiated through a donation by Academician Minhan Dai, who contributed the full RMB 200,000 prize he received from the 2023 Xiamen University Nanqiang Outstanding Contribution Award, the university’s highest honor. In addition, Mr. Gao Long made an earmarked donation of RMB 2 million to further strengthen the fund. The fund supports CAMS at XMUM by encouraging student excellence, promoting scientific innovation and advancing talent cultivation, discipline development and research capacity.

In his remarks, Academician Dai expressed gratitude to his alma mater and to colleagues worldwide for their support of marine science. He noted that establishing CAMS in Malaysia, the birthplace of XMU founder Tan Kah Kee, reflects the discipline’s appreciation for Tan’s legacy. He welcomed contributions from the broader community to the fund and expressed hope that CAMS will uphold the Tan Kah Kee spirit and cultivate innovative high-level marine talents.

Speaking on behalf of his father, Mr. Gao Xiangming shared that Mr. Gao Long had always embraced Tan Kah Kee’s belief in “saving the nation through education” and his spirit of gratitude and dedication. As both a descendant of an XMU alumnus and an XMUM graduate, he hoped the donation would advance the university’s educational mission and support high-quality development under the Belt and Road Initiative.

A student representative, Tan Ru En, expressed appreciation to the donors, stating that their generosity strengthens the college’s research and teaching environment and inspires students to pursue academic excellence. During the ceremony, Academician Dai and Mr. Gao presented the donation cheque to Prof. Wang Ruifang, who awarded certificates and commemorative gifts on behalf of XMUM.

🎓 Blue Carbon Breakthrough: CAMS Undergraduate Publishes in Q1 Journal After 550-Day Journey 🌊📚
The China-ASEAN College of Marine Sciences (CAMS) at Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM) proudly celebrates the exceptional research achievement of Gu Tianze, a Year 3 undergraduate in the Marine Biotechnology (MBT) programme. After a dedicated journey of 550 days, Gu has successfully published two peer-reviewed articles, including one in the prestigious Q1-ranked journal Ocean and Coastal Management — a rare feat for an undergraduate student. 🌟
💬 “550 days, 78 weeks, 18 months — that’s how long this journey lasted.”
— Gu Tianze, MBT Student, CAMS
🔍 From Essay to Academic Excellence
Tianze’s journey began in September 2023, when he and a teammate won third prize 🏆 at the "Mindu Jiageng Cup" Essay Competition for their work on blue carbon — nature-based solutions to combat climate change 🌱. Inspired by this, Tianze proposed turning the essay into a full scientific article. With the mentorship of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ng Chuck Chuan 🧑‍🏫, Head of Programme (Marine Environmental Chemistry), he navigated eight rounds of revisions 🔄, multiple rejections ❌, and months of hard work.
📝 The resulting publication,
📘 “Utilising coastal blue carbon (CBC) to mitigate the climate crisis: Current status and future analysis of China”,
evaluates CBC ecosystems like mangroves, salt marshes, and seagrass beds in China 🇨🇳. It reveals historic degradation due to urbanisation 🏙️, policy gaps, and proposes strategic reforms — including stronger legislation ⚖️, clearer ownership rights, increased public engagement 🤝, and blue carbon financing tools 💰.
📖 Read it here: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ocecoaman.2025.107699
🔬 Second Publication: Environmental Monitoring
Tianze also contributed as third author to a second paper,
📗 “Evaluation of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) contamination in seawater, sediment, and sea snails from Kukup Fishing Village, Johor, Malaysia”,
published in Environmental Monitoring and Assessment 🧪. He assisted with factual verification, manuscript revisions, and ensuring academic quality.
📖 Read it here: https://doi.org/10.1007/s10661-025-14007-4
🙏 A Word of Thanks
Tianze credits Dr. Chuck’s mentorship for his academic development:
💬 “I am sincerely grateful to Dr. Chuck for his unwavering patience, encouragement, and guidance. He believed in me from the very beginning.”
🎯 A Milestone for CAMS and Student Research
This dual-publication success showcases CAMS’s commitment to nurturing research talent and empowering undergraduates to engage in real-world environmental challenges 🌍. Gu Tianze’s journey is a shining example of what students can achieve with perseverance, vision, and strong mentorship. 💡🔬
