SARAWAK MARITIME ACADEMY HOSTS MALAYSIA MARITIME WEEK 2026 SATELLITE EVENT

SIBU, 15 September 2026 – Sarawak Maritime Academy (SMA) hosted the Malaysia Maritime Week (MMW) 2026 Satellite Event at its campus in Jalan Lanang, Sibu, bringing together representatives from the maritime industry, government agencies and maritime education sector.

The event was officiated by YB Datuk Henry Harry Anak Jinep, Deputy Minister for Transport II (Riverine and Marine), Sarawak, representing the Minister of Transport, Sarawak, YB Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin.

In his welcome address, SMA Director Capt. Philip Wong Jing Sing highlighted SMA’s commitment to quality maritime education, industry collaboration and the development of skilled local seafarers. Since 2009, SMA has enrolled 507 cadets, with its graduates progressing into professional maritime careers locally and internationally.

Delivering the keynote address, YBhg. Datuk Haji Dickson bin Dollah, Ketua Pengarah Laut, Jabatan Laut Malaysia, emphasised the importance of high standards in maritime education, stronger industry collaboration and preparing seafarers for digitalisation, alternative fuels and emerging technologies.

In his officiating address, YB Datuk Henry highlighted the maritime sector’s importance to Sarawak’s economic growth and called for greater opportunities in scholarships, training, sea-time placements and employment to develop a skilled local maritime workforce.

A key highlight was the signing of Memorandum of Understanding between SMA and four maritime industry associations — the Malaysian Shipowners’ Association (MASA), Sarawak and Sabah Shipowners Association (SSSA), Sarawak Maritime Industry Association (SAMIN), and Sibu Shipyards Association (SSA) — strengthening industry-academia collaboration in maritime education and local talent development.

The programme also featured industry forums, maritime technology presentations, an exhibition and live demonstrations in passage planning, bridge simulation, fire-fighting and life raft operations.

Through the MMW 2026 Satellite Event, SMA reaffirmed its commitment to connecting maritime education with industry needs and supporting the continued development of Sarawak and Malaysia’s maritime sector.

MAKING HISTORY: SMA CADETS AMONG THE FIRST TO VISIT THE NEWLY MINTED BINTULU PORT AUTHORITY SARAWAK (BPAS)

On 7.9.2026, 33 SMA cadets from the DNS & DME programs were deployed for a rigorous STCW field trip. We are deeply honoured to be one of the very first institutions officially hosted following the port’s historic transition to the state-governed Bintulu Port Authority Sarawak (BPAS).

Bintulu Port is a modern maritime infrastructure, a gateway to Malaysia’s economy, notably the Sarawak State. Beyond classroom theory, SMA cadets witnessed a facility that champions Green Port initiatives and IT Innovation. They observed the true scale of a one-stop ship and cargo services hub, driving the economic pulse by seamlessly moving heavy cargo to and from the Sarawak hinterland.

Most impressively, they now understand that Bintulu Port is the World’s No. 2 LNG terminal in a single location—a high-stakes environment operating under world-class HSSEQ procedures and a strict Zero LTI (Lost Time Injury) safety culture.

This was an ANALOGUE field trip. We enforced a strict zero-mobile-phone policy. Our cadets relied entirely on their eyes, ears, and pens to complete their field observation matrices—building the raw situational awareness required of future Ship’s Watchkeeping Officers & Engineers.

We were treated to excellent hospitality from start to finish. Special mention to the commanding leadership of two gentlemen who made this high-level exposure possible:

Capt. Zakhir Khan - Assistant General Manager (Operations), BPAS. for giving our cadets a clear view of the regulatory standard and port governance under the new state banner.
En. Wan Mohamad Zaidi (General Manager Marine Services, BPSB) for showcasing the best practices in marine operations and ex*****on on the water.
Despite their busy schedules managing a crucial economic gateway for Sarawak, they took the time and effort to host SMA delegates. Their demonstration of leadership became an inspiration for SMA cadets as the future Navigating Officers & Marine Engineers of Malaysia.

The learning points gained by SMA Cadets regarding Port Operations on 7.9.2026 will influence how safely and efficiently they operate the ships of tomorrow.

Thank you, BPAS and BPSB, for your unwavering support in developing the next generation of Maritime Leaders for Malaysia, and notably, for Sarawak!
