SoIS LECTURERS SHARE EXPERTISE AS PANELLISTS AND INTERNATIONAL GUEST LECTURERS AT IPDN
JATINANGOR, INDONESIA, 12-13 August 2026 – Three lecturers from the School of International Studies (SoIS), Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), shared their academic expertise at Institut Pemerintahan Dalam Negeri (IPDN), Indonesia, through two key academic engagements; as panellists at the International Seminar on Governance and Community Protection 2026 and as International Guest Lecturers, where each was entrusted to teach a class and engage directly with IPDN students. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bakri Mat, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mohammad Zaki Ahmad, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Siti Darwinda Mohamed Pero participated in the engagements held in conjunction with the SoIS strategic academic visit to IPDN from 12 to 13 August 2026.
At the international seminar, themed “Rethinking Public Governance in an Era of Demographic Change and Non-Traditional Security: Lessons from Indonesia and Malaysia,” the three academics shared their perspectives on contemporary security and governance challenges affecting Malaysia and the wider region.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bakri Mat discussed Malaysia–Thailand border security and governance, emphasising the importance of coordination and cooperation in addressing increasingly complex cross-border challenges. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mohammad Zaki Ahmad focused on maritime security, particularly Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing.
He highlighted the importance of effective maritime governance in protecting national interests as well as marine habitats, biodiversity, and ecosystems that transcend national boundaries. Meanwhile, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Siti Darwinda Mohamed Pero addressed refugees and migration, with particular attention to the Rohingya refugee situation in Malaysia. She highlighted the challenges faced by policymakers in balancing humanitarian responsibilities, public concerns, national interests, and effective migration governance.
Extending their academic engagement beyond the seminar, the three lecturers also took on the role of International Guest Lecturers at IPDN, with each entrusted to teach a class. The sessions enabled them to interact directly with IPDN students, share Malaysian and regional perspectives, and exchange ideas on contemporary international and security issues.
The two academic engagements provided a meaningful platform for knowledge exchange between UUM and IPDN while strengthening institutional ties between Malaysia and Indonesia. They also reflect SoIS’s commitment to internationalisation and to expanding UUM’s academic presence and visibility at the regional level.
