This book systematically uncovers the common seismic deficiencies prevalent in Malaysian reinforced concrete (RC) buildings, which were often designed solely for gravity and wind loads. It meticulously details vulnerabilities such as soft-story irregularities, strong beam-weak column mechanisms, captive and short columns, weak beam-to-column joints, and the detrimental effects of infill walls. Crucially, it highlights how inadequate reinforcement detailing, including insufficient anchorage and lap lengths of reinforcing bars, and large spacing of shear links, severely compromise the ductile behaviour essential for seismic resilience, leading to brittle failures.
Through advanced seismic fragility analyses, the authors quantify these vulnerabilities, providing probabilistic assessments of damage states for various RC building typologies-from short to tall structures, with and without infill walls-under different seismic intensities and ground motion characteristics. The book critically investigates the impact of factors unique to the Malaysian context, such as the increasing adoption of green roofs and the widespread practice of inadequate column lap splice lengths, revealing their significant contribution to a building's susceptibility to damage and collapse.
Ultimately, this work underscores the urgent need for a paradigm shift in Malaysian structural engineering practice, advocating for the rigorous adoption and enforcement of modern seismic design codes like the Malaysia National Annex to Eurocode 8. By providing a robust analytical framework and highlighting key areas of concern, the book serves as an invaluable resource for structural engineers, civil engineering students, researchers, urban planners, and policymakers, empowering them to make informed decisions, enhance building codes, prioritize retrofitting efforts, and foster a more resilient, sustainable, and secure urban landscape for Malaysia's future generations.
