We are pleased to share that the team from the Sunway Center for Electrochemical Energy and Sustainable Technology (SCEEST) has filed a patent titled “𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐨𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐲𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐖𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚 𝐌𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐌𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐚𝐦𝐞.”

This innovation reflects our continued commitment to sustainable materials research, where waste-derived resources are transformed into high-value functional materials with potential applications in thermoelectric systems and advanced sensing technologies.

This achievement highlights the faculty’s dedication to impactful research that bridges materials innovation, sustainability, and real-world technological applications.

The work was carried out by Dr Wong Weng Pin (during his PhD studies), Professor Numan Arshid (Supervisor), and Adjunct Professor Mohammad Khalid (Co-supervision). Special thanks to affiliate member Mr. Pyi Phyo Aung for his support, particularly in the IoT component of the project.

This week’s Researcher of the Week spotlight shines on Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr Farihahusnah Hussin from the Research Centre for Carbon Dioxide Capture and Utilisation (CCDCU).

Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr Farihahusnah Hussin is turning that possibility into reality. Through her research at CCDCU, she transforms biomass and industrial waste into innovative carbon materials that can capture and reuse CO₂ efficiently.

From advanced carbon sponges to nanomaterials for clean energy and environmental applications, her work is paving the way for smarter, greener technologies.

Please join us in congratulating our Bachelor of Chemical Engineering with Honours Year 3 students — Ng Cheong Yi, Tresa Au Wen Xin, and Taa Qi Hang — on their excellent achievement at An Engineering Challenge (AEC) 2026!

Organised by the Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Club (CEUC), University of Malaya, the Technical Case Study competition was held on 18 April 2026 at University of Malaya (UM) and saw participation from 35 teams. We are proud to share that our students emerged as First Runner-Up 🥈 in this highly competitive event.

Their project, “Zero Discharge in the Textile Industry in Malaysia,” focused on resource recovery and carbon mitigation strategies, contributing towards Net Zero goals and sustainable green industry practices. This accomplishment reflects their strong technical skills, teamwork, and dedication to engineering solutions for a sustainable future.

We also extend our heartfelt appreciation to the team advisors, Ir. Dr Yoon Li Wan and Ir. Dr Ayu Haslija Abu Bakar from the School of Engineering, for their invaluable guidance and support.

We are proud to share that Myint Zu Than, a PhD student in Doctor of Philosophy (Computing) from the Research Centre for Human-Machine Collaboration (HUMAC), Faculty of Engineering and Technology, has represented Sunway University on the global stage at the 𝐁𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐀𝐈 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 in Taipei, Taiwan!

This success was made possible through a strategic research partnership between Prof. Ir. Ts. Yap Kian Meng of HUMAC and Dr. Aaron Raymond See from TOUCH Lab at the National Chin-Yi University of Technology, Taiwan. It is also part of the MoU activities between the two prestige universities.

The team achieved a major milestone by being named 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐀𝐈 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐤 and earning a prestigious 𝐇𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐌𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 for their groundbreaking work in AI for digitizing knee palpation technology with KneeSense.

Congratulations to Dr Tang Tiong Yew from the Research Centre for Human-Machine Collaboration (HUMAC), who is listed as a co-researcher alongside his international research collaborator from Lac Hong University, Vietnam, for successfully securing a research grant of 𝐑𝐌 𝟑𝟏,𝟔𝟓𝟎 under the 𝟒𝐭𝐡 𝐂𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐚 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐥.

This international research project is titled “𝐅𝐀𝐒𝐓-𝐑𝐄𝐍𝐄𝐖–𝐀𝐬𝐢𝐚: 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐅𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐝 𝐖𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞-𝐭𝐨-𝐄𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐒𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐃𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐍𝐚𝐢 (𝐕𝐢𝐞𝐭𝐧𝐚𝐦) 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐘𝐚𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐥–𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐚𝐝 (𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐚)”, a joint effort international research project that involves countries from Vietnam, Malaysia, India and India to solve waste-to-energy sustainable energy challenges.
