🧬 PCR Practical Session with UniMAIWP

📅 13 August 2026 (Thursday)
🕤 9.30 AM – 4.30 PM

The PCR Practical Session with UniMAIWP was successfully conducted, bringing together 22 participants from UniMAIWP for a hands-on practical session focused on the fundamental techniques involved in PCR-based molecular research.

Throughout the session, participants gained practical experience in DNA extraction and quantification, PCR sample preparation and PCR running, gel electrophoresis, and result visualization using Gel Doc. The session also provided opportunities for participants to discuss their results and strengthen their understanding of PCR workflow and laboratory techniques.

IMMB was honoured to host Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Cheng Foh from the School of Biological and Environmental Sciences, University of Nottingham Malaysia, for an insightful research talk titled “Directed Evolution for High-Throughput Discovery of Novel Antimicrobial Peptide Analogues.”

The session explored the use of directed evolution and high-throughput approaches in the discovery and development of novel antimicrobial peptide analogues, highlighting their potential in addressing the growing challenge of antimicrobial resistance.

From adherent cancer cells to cancer spheroid

These images capture the morphological transformation of osteosarcoma cells following lentivirus transduction of pluripotency-associated genes. Over 21 days, the cells transitioned from a two-dimensional (2D) adherent state to compact three-dimensional (3D) spheroid structures, reflecting the acquisition of stem cell-like characteristics and enhanced cellular plasticity. This remarkable transition highlights the dynamic nature of cancer cell reprogramming and its potential role in disease progression. Images were captured at 200× magnification.

IMMB was honoured to host Dr. Lau Su Ee from the Centre for Research in Biotechnology for Agriculture (CEBAR) for an engaging research talk titled “From Brainstorm to Build: Designing STEM Projects on Alien Species.”

The session introduced participants to the process of developing STEM projects centred on alien species, from generating ideas to designing practical and impactful project outcomes. The talk highlighted the importance of integrating scientific knowledge, creativity, and problem-solving skills in addressing issues related to invasive alien species while promoting innovation in STEM education and research.

Seven Pandemics and Counting: The Continuing Story of Cholera

IMMB was honoured to host Assoc. Prof. Dr. Siti Farah Alwani binti Mohd Nawi (MBChB, M Path, DTM&H) from the Department of Medical Microbiology & Parasitology for an insightful research talk titled “Seven Pandemics and Counting: The Continuing Story of Cholera.”

The session explored the history and global impact of cholera, highlighting the factors that have contributed to its recurring pandemics and the challenges in controlling its spread. Participants also gained valuable insights into the epidemiology, prevention, and public health significance of cholera, as well as the importance of continued surveillance and research in combating infectious diseases.
